Lighting No.1

Fixture types across the Lighting No.1 range

Lighting No.1 is a contemporary range built around metalwork, and it is broad enough to light most of a home from one label. Rather than a single signature shape, it runs a consistent material language across very different formats. The breakdown below should help you get to the right part of it quickly.

Pendants and hanging lights

Pendants are the heart of this range and the largest group by some distance. They span single-drop designs over an island or a bedside, linear bar arrangements sized for a dining table, and multi-light clusters. Spiral, ring, hoop and rod forms recur, several of them built around integrated LED rather than a replaceable lamp.

Wall lights and sconces

Wall lights, or sconces in US terms, are the second largest group. They cover flat panel and plate designs, single and twin arm forms, and pieces that pair a metal frame with a glass diffuser. Most are indoor fittings, so check the IP rating on the listing if the position is anywhere damp.

Ceiling lights and flush mounts

For rooms with less height there are ceiling lights, called flush mounts in the US, including semi-flush designs that keep some of the detail of a pendant without hanging into the space. These suit hallways, landings and bedrooms where headroom is tight.

Table and floor lamps

Table lamps and floor lamps, or standard lamps, carry the same finishes as the ceiling and wall pieces, which makes it easy to layer light in a room without breaking the scheme. They are a practical way to add a warmer, lower light source alongside a central fitting.

Chandeliers and outdoor wall lights

Chandelier designs give a dining room or stairwell a larger centrepiece, generally with multiple lamps across a frame rather than a single source. Separately, the range includes a few outdoor wall lights rated IP44, which is suitable for sheltered exterior walls such as a porch or a back door, rather than fully exposed positions. All of them pair a metal body with clear or frosted glass. Some are die-cast designs using integrated LED, so there is no lamp to replace, while others take a standard E27 lamp, which is worth checking on the listing.

Glass, metal and the finish palette

Metal runs through almost every piece in this range, and a majority pair it with glass, clear so the lamp and the frame stay visible, with some frosted and opal where a softer, more diffuse light is wanted. The finish palette leans warm: brass in its antique, satin, brushed and aged forms is the most common, followed by clear glass, gold and nickel, with matt black, bronze and natural tones appearing across smaller parts of the range. Because the metals repeat across formats, a pendant and a wall light from different parts of the range will usually still sit together.

Lamp fittings, dimming and integrated LED

Fittings vary by design. E27 Edison screw is the most common, with E14 small Edison screw next and G9 capsule used on the more decorative multi-light pieces. Part of the range is integrated LED, where the light source is built in rather than replaceable, and those pieces are warm white. Most of the range is dimmable, but dimming depends on the lamp you fit as well as the fitting, so check the specification table on the product page before pairing anything with a dimmer switch.

Looking after metal and glass fittings

Dust metal frames with a dry, soft cloth and keep abrasive cleaners and metal polishes away from brushed and antique finishes, which mark easily. Glass diffusers and shades can be wiped with a barely damp cloth and dried straight away to avoid water spotting. Isolate the circuit before removing a diffuser or changing a lamp, and let the fitting cool first. For outdoor wall lights, check the seals and fixings occasionally, since weather exposure is what eventually degrades an exterior fitting.

Choosing your Lighting No.1 lighting

Start with the fixture type you need, then narrow by finish and by whether you want clear or diffused glass. If you are lighting a dining table or an island, the linear and multi-light pendants are the natural place to look; for a hallway or a low ceiling, the semi-flush ceiling lights will suit better. Use the filters to work through finish, fitting and IP rating, and read the specification table for dimensions and maximum wattage before you commit.
