Guitar stands and wall hangers

A folding A-frame stand is the cheapest reliable way to keep a guitar upright and takes seconds to set up at a gig. A wall hanger saves floor space entirely and displays the instrument, which suits a studio or a practice room, though it needs fixing into something solid rather than plasterboard alone. If you own several guitars, a multi-stand rack is far more stable than a row of individual stands and much harder to knock over.

A note on finishes

This matters more than most people realise. Some vintage and boutique instruments use nitrocellulose lacquer, which can react chemically with certain rubbers and foams, leaving a dull mark or a sticky patch where the stand touched it. If your guitar has a nitro finish, look for stands with a finish-safe contact material, or slip a cotton cloth between the instrument and the padding. Modern polyurethane finishes are generally unaffected, but a cloth costs nothing.

Keyboard stands: X-frame or table?

A single or double braced X-frame stand is light, folds flat and adjusts easily, which makes it the standard for gigging players. A double-X frame carries considerably more weight and flexes less, so it suits heavier stage pianos. A wooden furniture-style stand looks far better in a living room and is much more stable, but it is not designed to be dismantled weekly. Match the stand rating to the instrument weight rather than guessing.

Benches, thrones and seating height

Seat height changes technique, not just comfort. For piano, aim for forearms roughly level with the keys, which usually means a bench between 48 and 52 centimetres. For drums, most players sit with thighs sloping slightly downwards so the hips are above the knees, which keeps pedal control light. Height-adjustable thrones with a screw or hydraulic column are worth the extra over a fixed stool, and a double-braced tripod resists the sideways forces of active playing.

Drum and percussion stands

Double-braced legs are the practical choice for anything that gets played hard or moved often, since single braced legs are lighter but flex and creep. Check the tube diameter and the clamp design rather than the weight rating alone, because a poor clamp slips under vibration even when the stand is strong enough. For percussion pads and small kit, a tripod stand with a proper mounting plate is more stable than clamping to an existing stand.

Folding, transport and stability

Anything travelling weekly should fold flat and go into a bag, and it is worth checking whether the stand collapses without tools. On stage, spread the legs fully rather than partially, keep them out of walkways, and remember that a stand rated for a weight in a showroom is being asked to do more on a sloping or carpeted floor. If a joint has started to slip, replace the plastic clamp insert before it fails with the instrument on it.
