What sets a lantern apart from an open candle holder

The main difference is the frame. A lantern surrounds the flame with glazing on all sides, so the light is contained rather than exposed. That guarding gives you a steadier flame in a draughty room, keeps wax splatter off surrounding surfaces, and lets you place the light closer to walls or shelving without worry. An open holder shows more of the candle, but a candle lantern trades that for control and a calmer, more even glow.

The frame also does visual work. Metal and wood surrounds cast the light through their bars and panels, throwing gentle shadows across a table or floor. This is why decorative lanterns read as more of a fixture than a bare candle, and why they hold their own even when unlit.

Choosing between metal and wood frames

Metal frames tend to be slimmer and more open, so they let out more light and suit a pared-back or industrial room. Finishes include a few in matt black alongside warmer tones, and the thinner bars keep the piece from feeling heavy. Wood frames sit warmer and more solid, pairing well with rustic or country interiors and softening the glow through their broader uprights.

If you plan to group several together, mixing frame styles can look busy, so we suggest keeping to one material and varying the height instead. A run of matching metal lanterns in three sizes reads as one considered arrangement rather than a collection of odds and ends.

Sizing your lantern to the space

Tabletop lanterns work on mantels, sideboards and dining tables, where you want light at eye level without blocking the view across a room. Large lanterns and tall floor designs earn their place beside a fireplace, in an entrance or at the end of a hallway, filling floor space that would otherwise sit empty. A tall lantern can stand in for a lamp in a corner that lacks a socket.

Measure the surface or floor gap before you buy, and leave clear space above the lantern for heat to rise. As a rule, a group of odd numbers looks more natural than pairs, so three lanterns of differing heights make an easy starting point.

Candle safety and getting the fit right

Match the candle to the opening. A pillar or tealight should sit comfortably inside without touching the glass, and there should be headroom above the flame so the glazing stays cool. Never overfill a lantern with an oversized candle, and keep the flame well below the top of the frame. Always place a lit lantern on a level, heat-resistant surface, away from curtains and anything that could catch, and never leave a live flame unattended.

Clean glazing lets the light through properly, so wipe soot from the inside once the lantern has fully cooled. Trim wicks to around 5mm before lighting to keep the flame steady and the glass clear.

Using LED candles instead of a live flame

LED pillars and tealights are a sensible choice for a candle lantern in a busy home, near children or pets, or anywhere you want light left on without minding it. They give a similar flicker without heat, soot or wax, and they let you use a hurricane lantern shape purely for its looks.

Indoor and sheltered outdoor use

These lanterns are made for indoor use. Keep them out of driving rain and standing damp, as the finishes here are not weatherproof and moisture will mark metal and wood over time. For a covered outdoor spot, an LED candle removes any concern about a flame in a breeze, giving you the look of a hurricane lantern glow without the fuss.
