Lids, covers and keeping water out

Standing water is what destroys a fire pit, rusting the bowl from the inside and ruining any media in it. A lid does the immediate job and doubles as a table surface on some models; a full cover protects the frame and legs as well. Either way, fit matters more than material: a loose cover fills with water and lifts in wind.

Cooking on a fire pit

A grate or grill turns a solid-fuel pit into an open-fire barbecue. Cook over embers rather than flames, allow time for the fire to settle, and use charcoal or seasoned hardwood only. Do not cook over a gas fire pit unless it is expressly made for it, since the media is not food-safe and the flame pattern is wrong.

Measuring before you order

Almost everything on this page is sized to a specific bowl or burner, so measure before ordering rather than after. For a lid or a cover, measure straight across the rim at its widest point and note the depth as well, since a lid that fits the diameter can still foul a handle. For a grate, the internal width at the height it will sit matters more than the rim. Where a fire pit has a removable insert, measure both.

Media, tools and safety kit

Lava rock and fire glass are the media used in gas burners to spread flame and hide the burner, and only material sold for the purpose should go in: ordinary stones hold water and can burst when heated. Long tools keep hands away from heat, a spark guard matters where children are around, and something to put a fire out belongs beside the pit rather than in the shed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will any lid fit my fire pit?
No. Lids are sized to a bowl diameter and shape, so measure across the rim before ordering. A poor fit lets water in, which is the thing a lid is meant to prevent.

Can I cook on a gas fire pit?
Only if it is made for it. The media in a gas burner is not food-safe and the flame is designed for appearance rather than cooking. A solid-fuel pit with a proper grate is the one to cook on.

What is fire glass for?
It spreads the flame across a gas burner and hides the burner itself. It is toughened for the purpose. Never substitute ordinary gravel or pebbles, which can trap moisture and shatter when heated.

Do I need a spark guard?
On a solid-fuel pit, it is worth having wherever children, pets or dry planting are nearby. It will not stop radiated heat, so clearance still matters.

How do I clean out a fire pit?
Wait until the ash is completely cold, lift it out, and dry the bowl. Do not put water on hot metal. Keeping the bowl dry between uses does more for its life than anything else.
