Why the tripod shape works so well

A tripod floor lamp stands on three splayed legs rather than a single column, so it spreads its weight across a wider footprint while keeping the visual mass low and open. You can see through the frame, which stops it crowding a room the way a solid standard lamp sometimes can. That open triangle also sits happily over the edge of a rug, tucks behind the arm of a sofa and copes with floors that are not perfectly level. The look borrows from surveying instruments and studio camera stands, so it reads as practical rather than fussy, and it slots into everything from a coastal-leaning scheme in pale bamboo to a darker, more industrial room in black and antique metal.

How to choose a tripod floor lamp

Start with height. Lamps in this collection generally run from around 125cm for a lower base up to roughly 160cm for a full lamp with its shade fitted, and that difference matters more than it sounds. A taller lamp throws light over the back of a chair for reading; a shorter one pools light closer to a side table and feels calmer beside a bed. Home offices benefit too, as ambient light from a floor lamp reduces the contrast between a bright screen and a dark wall. Keep the flex tight against the skirting board, known as the baseboard in the US, and plan your route to the nearest socket or outlet before you settle on a position. Leave a little clearance from curtains and upholstery so the shade sits free on all sides.

Bulbs and light quality

Warm white LED bulbs around 2700K suit living rooms and bedrooms, while 3000K feels crisper for a working corner. If the lamp sits on a dimmer circuit or has a dimmable switch, choose a dimmable bulb, since standard LEDs will flicker or buzz. Opaque and lined shades push light up and down in two soft cones, which is flattering for evening use. Open cage frames and translucent shades spread light more widely but show the bulb, so a filament-style LED with a decorative shape is worth the small extra cost there.

Looking after it

Dust the frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, following the grain on timber and bamboo. For metal, a barely damp cloth followed by an immediate dry buff keeps brushed and nickel finishes clear of marks; avoid abrasive creams, which will dull the surface. Fabric shades respond well to a soft brush or a low-suction vacuum with an upholstery head, worked from top to bottom. Check the leg fixings every few months and gently tighten any that have loosened, and always unplug the lamp at the wall before changing a bulb or cleaning around the lampholder.
