Choosing the right artificial Christmas tree
The right tree starts with the space it needs to fill. Measure the ceiling height and leave roughly 30cm of clearance for a topper, then think about floor width — a full-shape tree makes a generous statement in a lounge, while a slim or pencil profile suits a hallway, bay window or smaller flat without crowding the room. Consider how close you will stand to it, too: a tree viewed up close rewards denser tips and a realistic branch structure.
Pre-lit or unlit?
Pre-lit trees arrive with integrated lights already wired through the branches, so there is no untangling or threading each December — you simply plug in and shape. Unlit trees give you free rein over your own string lights, colour temperature and quantity, which suits anyone who likes to restyle their scheme from one year to the next. Both are built to be assembled and taken down season after season.
Sizing and shape
Heights are quoted in feet and centimetres so you can match a tree to your ceiling. As a rough guide, a 6ft tree suits most living rooms, 7ft needs a taller ceiling, and 4–5ft or a tabletop tree works for flats, desks and secondary rooms. Shape matters as much as height — slim and pencil trees keep a narrow footprint, while full and flared shapes read fuller from every angle.
Styles and finishes
Classic green remains the most versatile backdrop for any colour scheme, while frosted, snow-tipped and flocked finishes lean into a wintry, Scandinavian look. Realistic trees blend moulded branch tips with traditional foliage for depth up close. Whichever you choose, a plainer tree gives your own baubles, ribbons and lights room to shine.
What to look for in a quality tree
A few details separate a tree that lasts from one that disappoints. Branch tips made from moulded PE (polyethylene) read the most realistic up close, and many trees combine these with traditional PVC tips for a fuller body at a lower price. A higher tip count means fewer gaps and a denser silhouette, while hinged branches — which swing down from the pole rather than slotting in by hook — make assembly quicker and hold their shape better over the years. Check the tree comes with a sturdy metal stand sized to the height, so a taller tree stays stable once it is dressed.
Shaping, care and storage
Every artificial tree looks its best once shaped: work from the bottom up, fanning each branch out and slightly upward so no gaps show. Dust with a soft brush or a low-suction vacuum, and keep the tree away from direct heat sources. Flat-boxed or bagged and stored somewhere dry, a good artificial tree lasts many seasons — far longer than the few weeks a real tree gives you.
Why choose an artificial tree
An artificial Christmas tree is a one-off buy that pays for itself over the years, with no needle-drop to sweep, no watering and no trip to a lot in the cold. It is a practical choice for anyone with pets, allergies or a busy December, and it comes out looking the same every year. Pair it with our wreaths and garlands, baubles and festive lighting to complete the scheme.
