How a hearing loop works
A loop amplifier takes speech from a microphone and drives a current through a loop of wire around the listening area. That current creates a magnetic field which a hearing aid picks up directly when the user switches to the T or loop setting. Because the sound travels straight to the aid, the background noise of a busy shop or a reverberant hall is left behind, which is why a loop transforms a conversation that would otherwise be impossible.
Counter loops and room loops
A counter loop is a small self-contained unit for a single point of service such as a ticket window, a pharmacy counter or a reception desk. It covers roughly a metre, needs no installation beyond plugging it in and is the usual answer for a shop or a surgery. A room loop uses a cable run around the perimeter of the space, driven by a larger amplifier, and covers a whole hall, chamber or waiting area. The choice is simply whether you need one position or the whole room.
Understanding your obligations
Under the Equality Act, service providers in the UK are expected to make reasonable adjustments so that disabled people are not put at a disadvantage, and providing a hearing loop is one of the most commonly recognised adjustments for people with hearing loss. What counts as reasonable depends on the size and nature of the service, so this is general guidance rather than a definitive ruling. If a loop forms part of a building compliance or licensing requirement, confirm the specification with your access consultant or building control before ordering.
Installing the loop cable
Run the loop cable around the perimeter of the area to be covered, at floor level under carpet or in trunking, or above a suspended ceiling. Keep it clear of large metal structures, since steel absorbs the field and creates dead spots, and avoid running it alongside mains cable. Bear in mind that the field extends beyond the loop, so in adjoining rooms where confidentiality matters, a smaller loop or a counter unit is the safer choice.
Testing and maintenance
A loop that has quietly failed is worse than no loop, because users rely on the signage. Test it regularly with a field strength meter or a listening receiver rather than assuming, check that the microphone has not been moved or covered, and make sure staff know how to switch it on and can explain it to a visitor. Display the standard blue ear symbol so users know a loop is available.
