Chrome Ceiling Lights

Our chrome ceiling lights bring a bright, reflective finish to living rooms, hallways and bedrooms, in flush and semi-flush fittings that sit close to the ceiling. Most are polished chrome and most are dimmable, and we stock them with crystal, clear glass, frosted glass and fabric shades. Further down the page, we cover bulbs, bathroom ratings, cleaning and matching your wall lights.

Choosing a chrome ceiling light finish

Chrome is a bright plated finish that bounces light back into the room. Most of our chrome ceiling lights are polished, with a mirror-like shine that gives the brightest sparkle. A few are brushed, with a fine grain that looks softer up close. A few have a satin finish instead, which gives a gentler sheen.

Most of the range is modern in style, and we stock traditional designs too. We also stock chrome paired with white, black or gold, so a fitting can pick up other colours in the room.

Flush and semi-flush chrome ceiling lights

A flush chrome ceiling light sits tight to the ceiling, the sensible choice for low ceilings and hallways where headroom counts. A semi-flush fitting drops a little on a short stem or frame, giving it more presence where the ceiling is higher. For a light that hangs lower, pendant lights and chandeliers have their own pages.

Most of our chrome ceiling lights suit a living room, and many also work in hallways, bedrooms, dining rooms and kitchens. Check the diameter and height on the listing against your room, and the weight if you are choosing a larger crystal fitting. We recommend a qualified electrician fits any ceiling light and confirms your ceiling can carry it.

Chrome ceiling light shades and diffusers

The shade or diffuser decides how a chrome ceiling light looks once it is switched on. We stock crystal designs, which scatter sparkle across the ceiling, and clear glass, which leaves the bulb on show, so choose one you are happy to see. Frosted glass, opal glass and acrylic diffusers soften the light and hide the bulb, which helps in a bedroom, where you look straight up at the fitting.

Fabric shades around a chrome frame give a calmer, more even glow and bring colour or texture into a living or dining room. Before you order, check whether the listing includes the shade or is for the frame only.

Bulbs for a chrome ceiling light

Start with the cap, because it decides which bulbs will fit. We stock chrome ceiling lights that take E27, the large screw cap; E14, the smaller screw cap used for candle bulbs; and G9, a small capsule bulb with looped pins. A few take GU10 spotlight bulbs. Many have integrated LED instead, with the light built in, so there is no bulb to buy. Where the lamp included line on the listing says no, buy bulbs to suit the cap shown.

With integrated LED the fitting sets the colour of the light, and with bulbs you choose it yourself. Warm white, such as 3000K, suits living rooms and bedrooms, and cool white, such as 4000K, gives a crisper light for kitchens. A few have an adjustable colour temperature, so you can change the tone of the light. Most of our chrome ceiling lights are dimmable, and the listing tells you whether you also need dimmable bulbs, a suitable dimmer switch or a trailing edge dimmer.

A chrome ceiling light in the bathroom

Chrome sits naturally beside bathroom taps and towel rails, but a bathroom light has to cope with steam and splashes. Some of the lights on this page carry an IP44 rating, which means they are protected against splashing water. Those are the ones to consider for a bathroom. Where a listing shows no IP44 rating, keep that light to dry rooms.

The rating a bathroom light needs depends on how close it sits to the bath or shower, so ask your electrician to check your ceiling position before you order. Steam also leaves water marks on chrome, so give the fitting a dry wipe now and then.

Cleaning a chrome ceiling light

Chrome's bright plated surface shows fingerprints, dust and water marks much as a mirror does. Switch the light off at the wall and let it cool, then wipe the chrome with a soft dry cloth, or one that is barely damp, and dry it straight away so no smears are left. Never use scouring pads, cream cleaners or anything abrasive, as they can scratch or dull the plating.

Soft cotton gloves stop fresh prints while you work. Wipe glass and crystal with a clean, soft cloth and dry them fully, and give fabric shades a gentle dust with a soft brush.

Matching a chrome ceiling light to wall lights

A room looks calmer when its fittings share the same finish, so if you choose a chrome ceiling light, look for chrome wall lights to sit alongside it and carry chrome through to switches and sockets too. Match the sheen as well as the metal: if your ceiling light is polished, choose polished wall lights, as mixed sheens can look like an accident rather than a choice.

Chrome looks good against white or black walls, and beside glass and steel in a kitchen. If the room also has table lamps or floor lamps, chrome ones carry the finish down to eye level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do your chrome ceiling lights come with bulbs?

It depends on the light, so check the lamp included line on the listing before you order. Where it says no, buy bulbs to match the cap shown, such as E27, E14 or G9. Integrated LED fittings have the light built in, so there is no bulb to add.

Can I put these lights on a dimmer switch?

Most of our lights here are dimmable, but check the listing first, as it tells you whether that light needs dimmable bulbs, a suitable dimmer switch or a trailing edge dimmer. If a listing shows a light as non-dimmable, keep it on a standard switch.

Can I put a chrome ceiling light in a bathroom?

Only if it carries an IP44 rating, which you will find on the listing, and some of the lights on this page do. Treat any light without that rating as one for dry rooms, and ask your electrician which rating your ceiling position calls for.

Does chrome show fingerprints and water marks?

It does: chrome is a bright plated finish, so prints and water marks show easily. A soft dry or barely damp cloth, followed by a quick dry, keeps it looking bright, but never use anything abrasive, as it can scratch the plating.

Should I choose a flush or semi-flush fitting?

Choose flush for a low ceiling, where headroom is tight, and semi-flush where the ceiling is higher and you would like the fitting to show a little more. Check the height on the listing against your ceiling before you buy.

Will chrome match my other fittings?

It will if you keep to the same finish, so pair a chrome ceiling light with chrome wall lights, switches and sockets, and match the sheen too, polished with polished. If you want to tie in other colours, we stock chrome with white, black or gold as well.

Do I need an electrician to fit a ceiling light?

Yes, we recommend a qualified electrician for any ceiling light. They can check the ceiling point is earthed where the listing asks for an earth connection, and that your ceiling can hold the weight shown.
