The shade does most of the work here: a wide drum of antique gold faux silk, lined in ruby so the light takes on a warm tint on the way down. It measures 40cm across and sits on a polished chrome body that keeps the fabric close to the ceiling rather than dropping it into the room. Inside is one lampholder, an E27, and an LED in the usual GLS pear shape is what we would fit.

This is the fitting for rooms where a pendant would hang too low: a hallway, a landing, a bedroom above a chest of drawers, a snug with a beamed ceiling. The gold and ruby reads well against off white plaster, deeper greens and warm wood, and it gives a smaller room some colour overhead without bulk. With a suitable lamp and a compatible dimmer the level can be brought down for the evening, though neither is supplied. We tend to suggest it to customers who want a shade with real depth of colour but not a large fitting.

The chrome is polished to a bright mirror finish rather than brushed, and the shade is faux silk, gold outside and ruby within. For care, take a soft brush or the upholstery attachment lightly over the fabric when dust gathers, then a dry cloth over the chrome; sprays and damp cloths mark faux silk, so keep both well away from it. It is an earthed Class 1 fitting for dry rooms indoors, hall, bedroom or sitting room, not a bathroom or a covered porch. It carries a one year warranty. It has a single E27 lampholder rated to a maximum of 20W. A GLS A60 shape LED is the sensible choice and gives plenty of light for a hall or bedroom.

How far does it hang below the ceiling?

Overall height is 38cm, with the chrome body accounting for 18cm of that, so the shade stays close in and clears heads easily in most rooms.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you use a dimmable lamp and a compatible dimmer. Neither the lamp nor the dimmer is included.
