What an MR16 bulb is

MR16 is a compact reflector lamp built for spotlighting. The reflector behind the LED shapes the light into a defined beam rather than spreading it in all directions, which is what makes these bulbs suited to picking out a feature or lighting a work surface. They are a common replacement bulb for recessed and accent fittings.

The GU5.3 pin cap

These bulbs sit on the GU5.3 cap, which uses two push-in pins rather than a screw or bayonet. The pins press into the matching holder, so before ordering it is worth checking your fitting takes a GU5.3 base. Where it does, the bulb pushes straight home.

Warm white or cool white

Two colour temperatures are offered. Warm white at 3000K gives a softer, cosier light that suits living and relaxing spaces, while cool white at 4000K is crisper and more neutral, which works well in kitchens, bathrooms and task areas. Choosing between them is mostly about the mood you want in the room.

Focused beam for spotlights

Because the reflector concentrates the light, these bulbs are at their best in recessed spotlights and accent fittings where a directed beam matters. Pointed at a picture, a worktop or an architectural detail, the shaped beam keeps the light where you want it rather than letting it wash across the whole room.

Standing in for halogen
