Which amplifier do you need?

A power amplifier does one thing well: it takes a line level signal from a mixer and drives passive speakers hard, which is what a band, a DJ or a venue needs. A mixer amplifier adds the inputs and the mixing into the same box and sends the result out on 100V line, which is how shops, pubs and offices are wired. A compact stereo or Bluetooth amplifier suits a home, a café or a treatment room where the source is a phone and the speakers are a single pair. A hearing loop amplifier is a different tool entirely, sending speech directly to hearing aids at a counter or in a room.

Power, impedance and headroom

Two figures decide whether an amplifier and a speaker will get along. Impedance is the load, and it falls as you add speakers in parallel, so two 8 ohm cabinets become a 4 ohm load that not every amplifier will tolerate. Power should be read as a continuous or RMS figure, and it pays to have a little more than the speaker needs, because an underpowered amplifier driven into clipping damages drivers far more often than clean power does.

100V line or low impedance?

Low impedance wiring, usually 8 ohm, is right for one or two rooms over short cable runs. A 100V line system puts a transformer in each speaker so many of them can share one amplifier over long, thin cable without losing level, which makes it far cheaper to install across a building. If you are covering three or more zones, 100V line is almost always the answer, and it brings zone control and paging with it.

Bluetooth and modern sources

Most current amplifiers include Bluetooth, and many add USB or SD playback and an FM tuner. Bluetooth is quick and convenient but pairs to one device at a time, so for a shop that opens daily a USB stick or dedicated player is usually more practical. It also adds a small delay, so use a wired input if the source is a television.

Rack space, heat and reliability

Heat is what shortens an amplifier life, and it is the thing most often overlooked when a unit is hidden in a cupboard or a rack. Class D designs run cooler and weigh far less than older linear amplifiers, which matters for anything that travels. Whatever you choose, leave air space above and behind it, and look for thermal, short circuit and DC protection.

Accessibility and hearing loops

If you run a shop, surgery or public building, a hearing loop is one of the most widely recognised reasonable adjustments for customers with hearing loss. A plug-in counter unit covers a single service point and needs no installation, while a room loop covers a hall or waiting area using cable around the perimeter. Both sit alongside, rather than replace, your music and paging system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a power amplifier and a mixer amplifier?

A power amplifier only amplifies, taking a line level feed from a mixer to drive passive speakers. A mixer amplifier includes the input mixing as well, so a microphone and a music source connect directly, and it usually outputs on 100V line for commercial systems.

How much power do I need?

For passive PA speakers, look for around 1.2 to 1.5 times the speaker continuous rating at your actual impedance. For a domestic pair of bookshelf or ceiling speakers, 20W to 50W per channel is ample. Headroom protects the speaker rather than endangering it.

Do I need 100V line?

If you are covering three or more zones or running long cable across a building, yes, because one amplifier can then feed many speakers over thin cable with zone control and paging. For one or two rooms, low impedance 8 ohm wiring is simpler and cheaper.

Can I connect two speakers to one channel?

Often, but check the impedance. Two 8 ohm cabinets in parallel present a 4 ohm load, and not every amplifier is rated for that. Running below the minimum rated impedance can damage the amplifier.

Why do amplifiers fail?

Most often heat and clipping. Leave ventilation above and behind a unit, particularly in a cupboard or a sealed rack, and avoid driving an underpowered amplifier hard, since the distorted output damages speakers as well as the amplifier.

Do you sell hearing loop amplifiers?

Yes. Counter loops are plug-in units covering a single service point such as a reception desk, and room loops use perimeter cable to cover a hall or waiting area. Both work alongside your existing music and paging system.
