Lavalier Microphones
Our range of lapel and lavalier microphones keeps the capsule close to the voice and out of the picture, which is why they suit lectures, weddings, video work and fitness classes. Alongside clip-on models we stock headset microphones for hands-free use and gooseneck and paging microphones for desks and counters. Found it cheaper elsewhere? We will match the price.

Lapel, headset or handheld?
A lapel or tie clip microphone is the least visible option, which is why it is standard for lectures, interviews and anything being filmed. A headset holds the capsule a fixed distance from the mouth, so the level stays even however much the wearer moves, making it the better choice for fitness instructors, presenters and stage work. A handheld gives the most control over level and tone but occupies a hand, so it suits speakers who stay at a lectern or pass the microphone around.
Wired or wireless?
A wired lapel microphone is cheaper, never runs out of battery and is fine where the speaker stays in one place. Once someone needs to walk, a wireless belt pack transmitter is worth the extra, and it is worth checking whether the pack uses the same connector as your existing system, because these are not standardised between manufacturers. If you already own a receiver, buying a matching transmitter and capsule is far cheaper than a second full system.
Placement and avoiding clothing rustle
Clip the microphone to a firm edge such as a lapel, collar or the placket of a shirt, roughly a hand span below the chin and slightly off centre. Avoid soft jumpers, scarves and anything that will brush the capsule as the wearer turns, since that rustle is impossible to remove afterwards. Loop the cable and tape it inside the clothing so a snag pulls on the loop rather than the microphone, and keep the cable away from a lanyard or a necklace.
Gooseneck and paging microphones
A gooseneck microphone holds its position on a desk, a lectern or a counter, which suits reception areas, meeting rooms and council chambers. Paging microphones add a press to talk switch and often a chime, and they connect into a 100V line amplifier so a shop or a warehouse can be addressed from a single point. Look for a switch that latches if announcements are long, and one that is momentary if they are brief.
Connectors and compatibility
Wired lapel microphones usually terminate in a 3.5mm jack or an XLR, and condenser types will need phantom power or a small inline battery. Wireless capsules terminate in whatever locking connector the transmitter brand uses, so check the fitting rather than assuming. If you are buying to add to an existing system, note the model of the belt pack before ordering a replacement capsule.
Fitness, teaching and worship use
These are the hardest jobs for a small microphone, because they combine movement, sweat and a loud backing source. A headset with a moisture resistant capsule and a spare windshield will outlast a lapel clip in a studio class. In teaching and worship, a lapel is usually enough, but keep a spare transmitter charged and remember that most feedback problems come from the speaker standing in front of the loudspeakers rather than from the microphone itself.
