A headset holds the capsule a fixed distance from the mouth, so the level stays even however much the wearer moves, making it the better choice for fitness instructors, presenters and stage work. A handheld gives the most control over level and tone but occupies a hand, so it suits speakers who stay at a lectern or pass the microphone around.

Wired or wireless?

A wired lapel microphone is cheaper, never runs out of battery and is fine where the speaker stays in one place. Once someone needs to walk, a wireless belt pack transmitter is worth the extra, and it is worth checking whether the pack uses the same connector as your existing system, because these are not standardised between manufacturers. If you already own a receiver, buying a matching transmitter and capsule is far cheaper than a second full system.

Wireless capsules terminate in whatever locking connector the transmitter brand uses, so check the fitting rather than assuming.
