Electric or manual?

An electric screen lowers at the touch of a button or a remote, which is what a boardroom, a classroom or a permanent home cinema wants, and it can be wired to drop automatically when the projector powers up. A manual pull-down screen costs considerably less and needs no power, so it suits a room used occasionally or where running a supply to the ceiling is awkward. Manual screens use a spring roller, so check the mechanism is rated for frequent use if it will be operated daily.

Sizing the screen to the room

Screen size is quoted as a diagonal, and the useful guide is that viewers should sit between roughly 1.5 and 2.5 times the screen width away from it. Work from your actual seating position rather than the room dimensions, since a screen that fills the wall is uncomfortable if the front row is close. In a classroom or meeting room, also check that the bottom of the image will sit above head height for people at the back.

Aspect ratio

A 16:9 screen suits film, television and most modern laptops, and is the right default for home cinema and presentations from current equipment. A 4:3 screen suits older projectors and document cameras, and still appears in education. If you show mixed content, choose 16:9 and accept that 4:3 material will sit within it with unused space at the sides, which is far better than the reverse.

Screen material and gain

Gain describes how much light the surface reflects back, with 1.0 being a neutral matt white. Higher gain surfaces look brighter head-on but narrow the useful viewing angle, so they suit a long narrow room rather than a wide one. Matt white remains the sensible choice for most rooms because it gives even brightness across a wide seating area. Black backing is worth having, since it stops light passing through the material and washing out the image.

Mounting the projector and throw distance

Every projector has a throw ratio, which tells you how far back it must sit to fill a given screen width. Multiply the screen width by the throw ratio to get the distance, and check that against where you can actually mount it before buying either item. A ceiling mount with adjustment in all directions saves a great deal of frustration, because a projector that is fractionally off axis produces a keystoned image that digital correction only partly hides.

Installation and light control

Fix a screen into something solid, since a roller assembly is heavier than it looks and an electric one heavier still. Leave the screen hanging for a day or two before judging it, as material creases from packing usually settle out. Finally, controlling light in the room does more for image quality than any upgrade to the screen, so consider blinds and where lamps sit before spending more on the surface.
