Lounge chairs for slow afternoons

A lounge chair sits lower and deeper than a dining chair, so you lean back rather than sit upright. It is the chair for a book, a cup of tea or a long conversation as the evening cools. Several of ours are woven from rope or rattan and paired with thick seat and back cushions, and some come with a matching footstool so you can put your feet up.

Place a lounge chair where you would naturally want to stop: by a sunny wall, beside a pond or at the end of a path with a view back to the house. Pair two lounge chairs with a small side table and you have a reading corner that needs very little space.

Dining chairs, often sold in pairs

Our dining chairs are sized to sit at a table, with a firmer, more upright seat than a lounge chair. Many are sold as a set of two, which makes it easy to add places to a table you already own or to build a set up two chairs at a time. Matching a chair to your table is mainly about seat height, so compare the two on the product pages. If your table has a crossbar or a pedestal base, check the gap beneath it against the chair's arm height, so the chair tucks in when it is not in use.

Adirondack and deck chairs

The Adirondack chair, with its wide arms and slatted, sloping back, is a garden classic, and ours are made in wood in a choice of colours. Its broad arms hold a glass or a plate, and the low, reclined seat invites you to stay put for a while. A cushion on the seat and back makes it more comfortable still for a long afternoon.

Deck chairs are the other classic: a wooden frame with a fabric sling, light enough to carry to wherever the sun is. They bring a seaside feel to a lawn and pack away neatly at the end of the day.

Woven rope and rattan designs

Woven chairs bring texture to a patio. Rope is wrapped tightly over a frame to give an open, airy pattern, while rattan weaves are denser and read like traditional basketwork. Both pair well with plain cushions and look relaxed beside planting. Choose a cushion colour that picks up the tone of the weave for a calm look, or a contrasting one to make the chair stand out.

Wood, metal and weave compared

Acacia wood appears across much of the range, from Adirondack chairs to dining chairs, and gives a warm, natural finish that suits a cottage garden or a timber deck. Metal frames, in steel or aluminium, are slimmer and suit a more contemporary patio. Aluminium is the lighter of the two to move around. Metal also dries quickly after a shower, which makes it easy to use first thing in the morning.

Choosing a chair for the space you have

Think about how the chair will be used most. For meals, a dining chair at the right height matters more than anything. For reading or relaxing, a lounge or Adirondack chair gives a better seat. On a small balcony, a pair of slim dining chairs leaves more room than one deep lounge chair. If children or older relatives will use the chairs, a firmer, higher seat with arms is easier to get in and out of than a low lounge chair.

Caring for garden chairs

Brush dust and leaves from the seat and any weave, wipe wood and metal with a damp cloth, and let everything dry in the air. Take cushions indoors when they are not in use, and keep chairs in a dry shed or under a cover through the winter. Follow the care advice on the product page for the chair you choose. Untreated wood weathers to a softer, silvery tone over time, while the finish the maker recommends keeps its original colour for longer.
