These are light, not heating. A flame lantern does the job a candle does, holding a steady flame at a height you notice, and it keeps doing it in a breeze. Along a table or a set of steps they mark out a space after dark far more pleasantly than a lamp. If what you want is warmth, a fire pit or a fire table is the right product and a lantern will disappoint you.

Tabletop lanterns sit among plates and glasses and read at close range. Taller pillar models stand on the ground and carry the flame up to around waist or chest height, which suits a path, a corner or either side of a doorway. Grouping two or three of different heights works better than spacing single pieces evenly. Keep them off routes people walk at night, and away from anything that overhangs.

Fuel and use

Gas lanterns light from a control on the body and run from a bottle or cartridge depending on the model, so check which before buying and where it houses. Keep the flame clear of fabric, planting and parasol canopies, do not move a lit lantern, and let it cool before you handle or cover it. As with any gas appliance, use it outdoors in open air.

Is a fire lantern the same as a chiminea?
No. A chiminea is a solid-fuel stove with a chimney, built to burn wood and give off heat. A fire lantern holds a contained gas flame for effect and produces very little warmth.
