Coir, rubber and washable mats
Coir mats, made from coconut fibre, are the classic scraper: stiff bristles knock mud off boots before it reaches the floor. Rubber and rubber-backed mats stay put and shrug off rain, which suits an exposed doorstep, while washable designs in softer fabric work better just inside the hallway where you want something that looks tidy and cleans easily.
Indoor versus outdoor use
Outside the door, choose a hard-wearing mat that copes with weather and heavy traffic. Inside, a washable mat catches the last of the dirt and protects the floor. Many homes use both, an outdoor scraper paired with an indoor mat, to keep the hallway clean.
Sizing your doormat
A mat should be wide enough to take a full stride so both feet make contact. Standard designs suit most doorways, while a longer runner works well in a wide entrance or a porch. Check the mat clears the bottom of the door as it opens, particularly for thicker coir.
Keeping a doormat in good shape
Shake or vacuum a coir mat regularly, as it will shed a little at first, and let it dry out if it gets wet rather than leaving it sodden. Washable mats can go in the machine following the care label, and rubber mats simply need a rinse.
