Why woven shades work overhead
Rattan is cut from the stems of climbing palms, then steamed, bent and woven into open or tightly packed patterns. Suspended above head height, that weave does something glass and metal cannot: it breaks the beam into a pattern of light and shadow that shifts across the walls as the evening draws in. The material carries a natural colour range too, from pale straw through honey to a deep toasted brown, and it takes black or white paint well when you want the silhouette to read more graphically. Because rattan is light in the hand, larger diameters stay manageable on a standard ceiling rose.
How to choose a rattan pendant light
Start with the job the light has to do. An open, loosely woven dome throws plenty of light downwards and sideways, which suits a room where the pendant is the main source. A dense weave or a lined shade concentrates the light below it, better over a table or a worktop where you want a defined pool rather than general brightness. Next, check whether you are buying a complete fitting or a non-electric shade. Non-electric pendant shades have no flex, lampholder or ceiling cup included and are designed to slot onto an existing suspension set or an electrified cord kit, which is worth confirming before you order. Finally, look at the fitting type at the top of the shade, since some sit on a standard ring and others need a specific adaptor.
Placement and sizing room by room
Over a dining table, hang the base of the shade roughly 70 to 90cm above the tabletop so sightlines stay clear across the table. A single wide dome of 50cm or more suits a round table; a run of two or three narrower cloches works better along a rectangular one. In a kitchen, space pendants evenly along an island and keep them clear of the hob extraction. In a hallway or on a landing, allow at least 2.1m of clearance beneath the shade so nobody ducks. Bedrooms take rattan beautifully, either as a pair flanking the bed in place of table lamps or as a single central fitting with a wide, soft-edged shade. For a covered porch or a sheltered veranda, choose a fitting rated for outdoor or damp locations rather than an indoor woven shade.
Finishes, weaves and materials
The finishes on this page span natural unpainted rattan, beige and white washes, light brown and blackened weaves. Natural rattan sits easily alongside oak, linen, terracotta and jute. Black rattan gives you the same texture with a much sharper outline, and it holds its own in a room with dark joinery or matt black taps and handles. White and beige washed shades keep a space feeling airy and suit coastal or Scandinavian-leaning schemes. Look out for mixed constructions as well: rope trims, opal glass diffusers set inside a woven dome, and brass or chrome hardware at the ceiling that ties the fitting back to other metalwork in the room.
Bulbs, dimming and light quality
Cap fittings across woven pendants vary, so read the specification on each listing: you will find E27 screw caps, smaller E14 caps and bayonet fittings depending on the design. Warm white LED bulbs in the 2400K to 2700K range flatter rattan's natural tones; anything cooler tends to flatten the colour and make the weave look grey. If the shade is open enough to see the bulb, a filament-style LED looks better than a bare plastic globe. For dimming, pair a dimmable bulb with a compatible trailing-edge dimmer switch, and check the wattage ceiling given for the fitting before you buy.
Looking after rattan
Rattan is durable but it does not like extremes. Dust the weave every few weeks with a soft brush or the upholstery attachment on a vacuum, working along the strands rather than across them. For a deeper clean, wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry straight away; soaking the material can loosen the weave and raise fibres. Keep shades out of direct, prolonged sunlight, which fades natural tones unevenly, and avoid hanging them directly above a steaming kettle or an unvented shower. If a strand lifts, a dab of wood glue pressed flat will usually settle it. Always switch the circuit off at the consumer unit before removing a shade for cleaning.
Building a scheme around them
One woven pendant rarely wants competition from another strong texture at the same height. Balance it instead with smooth surfaces below: a lacquered table, a plain plaster wall, a glazed ceramic lamp base. Repeating the material quietly elsewhere in the room, in a tray or a basket, ties the pendant in without turning the whole space into a theme. And if the ceiling is low, a shallow dome or a tapered bell keeps the visual weight high and the headroom intact.
