Modular or fixed plates?

A fixed plate has its connectors built in, which is cheaper and quicker where you know exactly what the outlet needs to carry. A modular plate is a blank frame with apertures that accept keystone modules, so you can combine an HDMI, a network socket and a speaker outlet on one plate, and change one of them later without replacing the whole thing. For a permanent install where requirements may change, modular pays for itself the first time something is added.

Keystone modules and how they fit

Keystone is a standard aperture size, which means modules from different ranges usually fit the same plates. They snap in from the rear and lock with a tab, so populate the plate before you offer it up to the wall rather than fighting it in place. Count the apertures you need and allow a spare, since a blank insert costs very little and looks far better than an empty hole.

Back boxes and depth

The commonest mistake here is depth. HDMI plugs are bulky and need a deep back box, typically 35mm or more, and a cable bending sharply behind a shallow box will either refuse to seat or slowly damage the connector. Check the required depth before chasing the wall, and where a run may be upgraded later, leave a draw string in the conduit so a future cable can be pulled through without cutting the plaster open.

Speaker outlets and terminals

For speaker connections, look at how the plate terminates. Screw terminals and binding posts accept bare cable and give a solid, serviceable connection. Spring clips are quicker but hold less securely and take thinner cable. Whichever you use, keep the polarity consistent at both ends of the run and label the plate, because tracing which plate feeds which speaker afterwards is a job nobody enjoys twice.

Finishes and matching what is already there

Plates come in moulded white and in metal finishes such as brushed steel and chrome. If you are adding to a room, match the existing electrical accessories rather than the equipment, since the plate will be seen alongside sockets and switches rather than the television. Bear in mind that white plastic yellows over years, so a new white plate beside an old one may not match as closely as expected.
