Why marble suits a small table

On a large surface marble is an investment and a maintenance decision. On a side table it is neither, because the top is small enough that the cost is modest and the veining reads as a single piece of pattern rather than a landscape. A small round top is also the shape that shows stone best, since the grain runs off in every direction instead of lining up with an edge. It is the easiest way to get real stone into a room.

White, gold, black and bronze

The top and the base are usually different colours here, and the base is what sets the tone. White marble on a gold or brass frame is the warmest combination and the one that reads as the most decorative. White on black is cooler and quieter. A bronze frame sits between the two and works with both brass and darker metals elsewhere in the room. Dark marble tops read almost as solid from a distance and show their veining only close to.

Beside a sofa, beside a bed

The two jobs want slightly different things. Beside a sofa the top should sit close to the arm height so a glass does not have to be lifted, and the footprint matters more than the surface. Beside a bed the height should be close to the top of the mattress, and you want enough surface for a lamp, a book and a glass without them touching. A table that is too low beside a bed is the most common mistake and the most annoying to live with.

Metal and wooden bases

Marble is heavy for its size, so the base is doing real work even on a small piece. Metal is the most common here because a slim frame will carry the weight and keep the table visually light, which matters when it stands beside a larger piece of furniture. Timber bases are warmer and need more material to do the same job. A wide base or a tripod is steadier than three narrow legs on a rug, and a rug is where most side tables end up.

Living with the stain

Marble is porous, which matters more on a side table than anywhere else in the house, because this is the surface that actually receives the wine glass and the coffee cup. Wine, coffee, citrus and oil will mark it if left, and acidic cleaners etch the surface rather than stain it. A coaster is the whole of the maintenance, along with a prompt wipe and a pH-neutral cleaner. Sealing once a year slows absorption without making the stone immune.

Pairing and grouping

Two small tables beside one sofa often work better than one larger one, because they can be moved apart when people need somewhere to put a plate and pushed together when they do not. If you are buying a pair, buying them at the same time is worth doing: stone varies between batches and two tables bought a year apart will not match as closely as two bought together. Heights can differ deliberately, and a small difference reads as intended where a tiny one reads as a mistake.
