Pocket sprung, foam and hybrid
Pocket sprung mattresses use individually wrapped springs that move independently, giving even support and less disturbance when a partner turns over. Memory foam moulds to the body and eases pressure on the hips and shoulders, which suits side sleepers. Hybrid designs layer foam over springs to combine support with cushioning, a good all-rounder if you are unsure which way to go.
Choosing a tension
Tension is how firm the mattress feels. As a rough guide, lighter sleepers and those who sleep on their side often prefer soft to medium, back sleepers tend to suit medium to firm, and heavier sleepers or front sleepers usually want firmer support. Comfort is personal, so treat these as a starting point rather than a rule.
Mattress sizes explained
UK sizes run from single at 90cm wide, through small double at 120cm and double at 135cm, up to king at 150cm and super king at 180cm. Choose the largest that fits the room comfortably, allowing space to walk around the bed, and check the size matches your existing frame.
Caring for your mattress
Rotate the mattress end to end every few months to even out wear, and use a washable protector to guard against spills and keep it fresh. Air the mattress occasionally, and follow any turning guidance on the product page, as some designs are single-sided and should not be flipped.
