Sofas and armchairs for the living room

Plan a living room around the sofa first. Our sofas section is the place to compare shapes and upholstery, while our chairs and seating section holds the armchairs and accent chairs that sit alongside. We stock upholstered pieces in fabric, velvet, bouclé and leather: velvet and bouclé feel soft and warm, and leather is easy to wipe over in a busy home.

Before you settle on a shape, measure the wall it will stand against and the doorways and stairs it must pass through. Seat depth and back height decide comfort, so compare them between designs. A footstool lets you put your feet up and doubles as a spare seat.

Dining chairs, stools and benches

Dining chairs live in our chairs and seating section too, alongside stools, bar stools and benches. We stock dining chairs in wood, metal and upholstered designs. Wooden seats are the simplest to keep clean at a family table, while a padded seat is kinder through a long dinner.

For a kitchen island or breakfast bar, measure from the floor to the underside of the worktop, then choose a stool that leaves comfortable room for your knees. A bench along the side of a dining table fits more people into less space and slides underneath when you want the floor back.

Coffee, side, dining and console tables

Our tables section holds coffee tables, side tables, dining tables and console tables, plus nests of tables that tuck into one another when not in use. We stock them in oak, marble, glass and metal. A coffee table works best at roughly the height of your sofa seat, and a side table at about the height of the arm beside it.

For a dining table, allow room around it for chairs to pull out and for people to walk behind them. A round table keeps conversation easy in a square room; a rectangular one suits a long space. A few of our dining tables extend for the days when guests come. In a hallway, a console table gives keys and post a home without blocking the way.

Storage furniture and shelving

Our storage and shelving section gathers sideboards, cabinets, display cabinets, TV units and shelving units. Decide first what you are putting away: drawers keep small things sorted, cupboard doors hide bulkier items, and open shelves suit books and the things you like on show.

Check the depth as well as the width, and leave clearance in front so doors and drawers open fully in a narrow room or alcove. A TV unit should be wider than the screen it carries, with space behind for cables. For smaller things, we stock storage boxes and baskets in rattan, wicker and fabric. Once tall shelving is in place, fix it to the wall.

Bedroom and nursery furniture

Our bedroom furniture section brings together bed frames, bedside tables, wardrobes and chests of drawers. Start with the bed, checking its length against the room so you keep a clear path around it. Some of our bed frames have an ottoman base that lifts to reveal storage underneath. A few of our wardrobes have sliding doors, which save space where a hinged door would catch the bed.

Our kids and nursery section holds furniture for a baby's room and a growing child's bedroom. We stock a few nursery sets that give you matching pieces in one go. In a child's room, anchor wardrobes, chests and tall units to the wall.

Finding furniture by room or style

Furnishing one space at a time? Our shop by room section groups furniture by where it goes, from the living room and dining room to the bedroom, hallway, kitchen and study. Most of what we stock suits a living room. Look beyond the room a piece is listed under, though: a bench works at the end of a bed as well as at a dining table.

Already know the look you want? Start with our shop by style and material section. We stock modern, Scandinavian, mid-century modern, rustic, classic and industrial furniture. Pale wood and clean lines point to Scandinavian, slim tapered legs to mid-century modern, and metal paired with darker wood to industrial.

Choosing furniture materials and finishes

Wood runs through most of the furniture on this page. We stock oak, walnut and mango wood pieces, and if solid timber matters to you, check the material in the product details before you order. Some pieces use MDF, which gives a smooth, stable surface. Alongside wood you will find marble, glass, concrete, rattan and wicker, plus metal in black, brass and bronze finishes.

Think about how you live with a material. Glass keeps a small room feeling open but shows fingerprints, marble needs coasters and a quick wipe after spills, and rattan and wicker are light enough to move about. A matt finish hides marks better than a polished one, and an antique finish suits a classic or rustic room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need to assemble my furniture?

It depends on the piece. Where the product details list assembly, they tell you whether a piece is ready to use, needs its legs fitting or needs full assembly, so check them if you would rather not build anything yourself.

How can I be sure a sofa or wardrobe will fit through my door?

Measure the width and height of your doorways, hallway turns and stairs, then compare them with the piece's width, depth and height. Allow extra room for turning a long sofa or a tall wardrobe around a corner.

Are dining chairs sold singly or in sets?

Both, depending on the chair. Check the title and product details before you add chairs to your basket, so you know whether a listing covers a single chair or a set and can order the number your table needs.

What is the difference between an armchair and an accent chair?

An armchair is built for long, comfortable sits, with arms and a supportive back. An accent chair is a lighter, occasional seat, chosen as much for its shape and colour as for lounging, which makes it a good fit for a bedroom corner or a reading spot. We stock both, so start with how often the chair will be used.

Is your furniture solid wood?

Not always. Most of what we stock uses wood, but that can mean solid timber, a wood veneer or MDF. If you want solid wood, look for it in the material listed in the product details.

How do I look after wood, marble and velvet furniture?

Wipe wood and marble with a soft, slightly damp cloth, dry them straight away, and keep coasters under drinks on marble. For velvet, bouclé and other fabrics, vacuum gently on a low setting and spot clean with a damp cloth. Where a piece has its own care note in the product details, follow that first.

Where should I start if I am furnishing a whole room?

Start in our shop by room section and choose the largest piece first, such as the sofa, dining table or bed. Once that is settled, add the tables, storage and seating around it, repeating a wood tone or metal finish so the room hangs together.
