What a ceiling rose and hook actually do

A ceiling rose is the plate that sits where the flex meets the ceiling, covering the outlet and giving the cable a tidy point to drop from. A hook is the separate fitting that takes the weight of a heavier pendant or chandelier, or that lets you reposition a light away from its electrical point. The two often work together: the rose conceals the wiring while the hook carries the load and sets the drop. Swagging: moving a light to where you want it

Swagging is the technique of hanging a pendant from a ceiling hook and draping the cable across to its outlet, rather than letting it hang straight down from the wiring point. It is useful when the existing outlet sits in the wrong place, for example off-centre over a dining table or to one side of a bed. A pendant hook fixed at the chosen spot takes the weight, and the flex loops back to the rose. We stock pendant ceiling hooks in packs, in brushed chrome and matt black, including 20mm sizes, so you can buy the right number for a single drop or a row of pendants over an island or table. Cable holders help here too, guiding and tidying the run of flex between the hook and the outlet so the swag sits cleanly. Ours come in small and large sizes and in brass, black, copper, chrome and white, so you can match them to the hook and the rose, or pick a finish that stands out against the ceiling. A longer swag usually needs more than one holder spaced along the run, which keeps the loops even and stops the cable sagging between fixings.

Period detail and modern minimalism

The look of the rose matters as much as its function. For traditional and period rooms, finishes such as antique brass, antique nickel, polished nickel and polished gold sit comfortably with classic fittings. For contemporary and industrial schemes, matt black, brushed brass, copper, silver, polished chrome and white keep the fixing point understated or let it read as part of the design. Sizes in our range span small roses around 88mm and 90mm through to larger 180mm plates, so you can choose something discreet or a fitting that holds its own on the ceiling. Most pieces are metal, in modern, minimalist and industrial styles, which suits living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, hallways, bedrooms and study spaces. The same logic applies in commercial spaces: cafés, bars and shops often use rows of swagged pendants, and a matt black or brass rose and hook can either disappear against the ceiling or become part of the look.

Plug-in, magnetic and recessed roses

Not every rose is wired in the traditional way. Plug-in ceiling roses use 3-pin and 4-pin connections so a pendant can be unplugged and changed without rewiring, which is handy if you like to swap fixtures. Magnetic ceiling roses let the pendant attach and detach at the ceiling, with single-light, 6-light and 8-light versions for grouping several drops from one point. Recessed magnetic roses sit flush into the ceiling for a cleaner finish. There are also roses with an integral terminal block, giving you the connection point built into the fitting. Choosing between them comes down to how often you expect to change the light and how visible you want the fitting to be.

Hanging a pendant safely

Whatever the style, the fixing has to be sound. A hook or rose should be fixed into a joist or a suitable fixing, not into plasterboard alone, and the fitting needs to be rated for the weight of the light above it. Heavier chandeliers in particular should hang from a hook rated for the load rather than from the flex. When you fix a hook for a swag, make sure it goes into solid timber at the new position too, not just at the original outlet. Most of the roses and hooks in our range are IP20 rated, which means they are intended for dry indoor spaces rather than bathrooms or outdoor use, so check the rating of the specific fitting before using one anywhere damp.
