Dimming LED lighting smoothly

Older rotary dimmers were built for filament bulbs and often struggle once you fit LEDs, which can lead to flicker, buzz or a narrow usable range. The intelligent dimmers in our range are designed for modern dimmable LED loads. Knightsbridge units carry rated ranges such as 10-200W (with a 5-150W LED window) and 5-400W versions, so you can match the dimmer to the lamps on the circuit rather than overloading a small set of LED downlights.

For the best result, always pair an intelligent dimmer with bulbs marked as dimmable. Mixing dimmable and non-dimmable lamps on the same circuit, or running a load far below the stated minimum, is a common cause of poor low-end behaviour.

Choosing gangs and ways

Gang count is simply the number of dimmer controls on a single plate. We stock 1, 2, 3 and 4 gang options, so one plate can control a single pendant or several lighting zones in an open-plan space. Most units in our range are 2-way, which lets two switch positions control the same lights, useful at the top and bottom of stairs or at either end of a hallway.

If you are replacing an existing dimmer, check the gang count and switching arrangement of the unit already fitted before you order, then confirm the wattage of the lamps it will run.

Finishes and plate styles

Our Knightsbridge dimmers come in screwless plates as well as rounded and square edge styles. Finishes run from matt white and matt black to brushed chrome, polished chrome, polished brass, antique brass, smoked bronze, black nickel and anthracite, with metal, stainless steel and resin plates across the range. That makes it straightforward to match a dimmer to other switches and sockets already on the wall and keep a consistent look from room to room.

Fitting your dimmer

A dimmer swap involves fixed mains wiring, so we recommend a qualified electrician for installation. They can confirm the load is within the dimmer's rated range and that the unit suits the lamps on the circuit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these dimmers work with LED bulbs without flickering?

The intelligent dimmers in our range are designed for dimmable LED loads, which is where older rotary dimmers often cause flicker. Always use bulbs marked as dimmable and keep the total load within the unit's stated range, such as the 5-150W LED window on many models. Running too few LEDs below the minimum load, or mixing in non-dimmable lamps, is a frequent cause of flicker at the low end.

What do gang and 2-way mean on a dimmer?

Gang is the number of separate dimmer controls on one plate, so a 2 gang dimmer controls two lighting circuits from a single position. We stock 1, 2, 3 and 4 gang options. 2-way means two switches can control the same lights from different places, for example at the top and bottom of stairs. Most dimmers in our range are 2-way, and a qualified electrician can confirm the switching arrangement your room needs when fitting the unit.

How do I pick the right wattage dimmer?

Add up the wattage of all the lamps on the circuit, then choose a dimmer whose rated range covers that total. Our Knightsbridge units include ranges such as 10-200W and 5-400W, each with a separate, lower LED window. Staying within both the minimum and maximum keeps dimming smooth. If you are unsure, ask your electrician to confirm the load when they fit the unit.

Can I match a dimmer to my other switches and sockets?

Yes. Our dimmers come in screwless, rounded edge and square edge plates, with finishes including matt white, matt black, brushed chrome, polished chrome, polished brass, antique brass, smoked bronze, black nickel and anthracite. Choosing the same finish and plate style as your existing Knightsbridge switches and sockets keeps the look consistent across a room.

Do I need an electrician to fit a dimmer switch?

Fitting a dimmer means working with fixed mains wiring, so we recommend a qualified electrician for the job. As well as making the connection safely, they can check that the lamps on the circuit are dimmable, that the load sits within the dimmer's rated range, and that the gang count and switching match what the room needs.
