What a pull cord switch does
A pull cord switch is operated by hand using a hanging cord rather than a wall plate. Because the control hangs from the ceiling and the body is mounted overhead, it suits bathrooms and damp areas where a conventional wall switch is not ideal. The cord keeps the point of contact away from the wall, which is the main reason these are chosen for wet rooms and shower spaces.
Types in the range
The range runs from one-way and two-way switches for lighting through to heavier double pole units for isolating equipment, several of which include a neon indicator and a mechanical on and off action. There are also trailing edge pull cord dimmers, so you can adjust light levels from the same overhead cord rather than switching only on and off.
Finishes
Finishes include white and matt white, matt black, polished chrome, brushed chrome, brushed nickel, black nickel, antique brass, smoked bronze and anthracite. Lighter finishes blend into a painted ceiling, while metal and darker finishes stand out as a deliberate detail. Choosing one finish for the cord switches and any matching wall accessories keeps a bathroom looking consistent.
How to choose
Decide first whether the switch controls lighting or isolates a fixed appliance, as this points you to either a lighting switch or a double pole unit. If you want adjustable light levels, choose a pull cord dimmer instead of a plain switch. A neon indicator is helpful where you need to see at a glance whether a circuit is live.
Where these are used
Pull cord switches are most common in bathrooms, en-suites, shower rooms and utility areas. As fixed fittings, they should be installed by a qualified electrician. Free UK delivery over £99, worldwide shipping.
