What a blanking plate is for
It covers an electrical back box that has nothing in it. That happens more often than people expect: a socket gets moved during a kitchen refit, a light circuit is taken out, a media wall is reorganised, and the box behind stays in the plaster because removing it means making good. The plate screws over the opening and the wall looks deliberate again. There is no wiring, no live part and nothing to maintain.
Getting the size right, and matching the run it sits in
The plate has to match the box, not the hole in the plaster. A single gang box takes a plate around 86mm square; a double gang box takes one around 146mm by 86mm. Both fix on the same 60.3mm screw centres a switch or socket uses, so if you know what came out you know what goes back. If the box is unknown, take the old faceplate off and measure the fixing lugs rather than the aperture.
This is the whole reason to buy one deliberately rather than take what is nearest. A wall of matched switches with one mismatched blank is more noticeable than no blank at all, because the eye goes to the odd one. Our plates run in the same finishes as the switch and socket ranges they sit beside, so a brushed chrome blank meets brushed chrome sockets and reads as part of the line. Where a range offers a screwless profile, take the blank in the same profile as well as the same colour.
Blanking plates and grid blanking modules are different things
Worth separating, because the names are close. A blanking plate covers a whole back box. A grid blanking module is a small insert that fills an empty slot inside a grid frame, alongside the switches and sockets already in it. If you are looking at a plate with several openings and one is empty, you want a module. If you are looking at a bare box in the wall, you want a plate. Our grid modules sit in their own range.
Fitting one, and the one safety step
Two screws into the existing box and the job is finished. The plate carries no current, but the box may still be connected, so isolate the circuit at the consumer unit and confirm it is dead before the old faceplate comes off. If there are live conductors in the box they must be terminated properly by a qualified electrician before anything is blanked over. Capping conductors and covering them is not the same as making them safe.
Finishes and how they wear
A blank gets touched less than a switch, so the finish lasts longer, and the practical differences are about how each one shows marks rather than how it holds up. Polished chrome and gloss black show fingerprints and want a dry cloth. Brushed and satin finishes hide them. Matt white disappears against most paint. Brass warms over time on unlacquered ranges, which matters if it is going beside a lacquered socket that will not. Screwless plates give a flat unbroken face; standard plates show two visible screws, which some people prefer for consistency with older fittings.
Buying more than one
Blanks are rarely wanted singly. A kitchen refit that moves the switching typically leaves two or three boxes behind, and a media wall reorganised around a television often leaves more. It is worth counting the positions before ordering, because a second delivery for one plate costs more in carriage than the plate does.
Where several blanks go in one room, keep them identical. Two finishes of blank in one space is more obvious than the boxes were. And if you are blanking a position that sits in a run with switches you may replace later, buy the blank from the range you intend to move to rather than the one currently on the wall, so the change happens once.
When to blank and when to remove the box
Blanking is the right answer when the box may be wanted again, when it sits in a tiled or papered wall, or when the cabling behind it is still live for something else. Removing the box entirely is better where a wall is being replastered anyway and the circuit is genuinely gone, because a blank is still a visible object and a filled wall is not. On a plasterboard wall a removed box leaves a hole that needs patching, so most people blank it. On a chased masonry wall it can be filled flush.
