Start with how you use the space
An outdoor scheme is easier to get right when you begin with the thing you do most. If you eat outside, the table sets the size of everything else, and the parasol has to clear it. If you sit out in the evening, warmth and light matter more than seating capacity, and a fire table earns its footprint twice over as a surface and a heat source. Where the garden is small, pieces that fold, stack or double as storage keep the space usable when the furniture is not in use.
It is worth being honest about how often you will actually be out there. A full dining set earns its space in a garden that gets used most weekends and becomes an obstacle in one that gets used twice a year. Aspect matters as much as size: a south-facing terrace needs shade before it needs anything else, while a garden that loses the sun by six wants warmth and light instead. Both are cheaper to solve at the start than to retrofit.
Shade that suits the spot
Shade divides into two families and they behave very differently. A centre-pole parasol is the simpler and steadier of the two, and it drops through the hole in a dining table so the weight is shared. A cantilever, known in the US as a cantilever or offset umbrella, hangs its canopy from a side post so nothing interrupts the space underneath, which suits a seating group or a sun lounger. Shade sails cover a wider area for less money and stay up all season, though they need fixing points that can take the load.
Materials and what they ask of you
Powder-coated aluminium is the low-maintenance choice for frames. It does not rust, it is light enough to move, and it takes a knock without much showing. Steel is heavier and steadier but wants its coating kept intact. Woven synthetic rattan handles rain and sun far better than natural rattan and only needs washing down. Hardwood is the one material that asks for something each year, and in return it is the one that ages well. Fabrics vary more than they look: an acrylic canopy holds its colour where a cheaper polyester will fade on the folds first.
None of these materials mind the cold. What they mind is sitting wet, which is why how furniture is stored matters more than what it is made of. A set standing on ground that drains, lifted clear of puddles and under something breathable will come through a winter in far better condition than a dearer set left on a low patio where water collects. Ask what a material wants from you each year, and buy the answer you will actually give it.
Fire, warmth and the evening
Fire pits and fire tables extend the useful part of the year at both ends. Gas models light instantly, produce no smoke and can be turned off, which makes them the practical choice on a terrace or anywhere close to the house. Solid fuel gives more heat and the smell people associate with a fire, at the cost of ash and smoke drift. Fire lanterns sit apart from both: they are a flame for atmosphere rather than a heat source, and they read as light in the way a candle does.
Protecting what you have bought
Most garden furniture is ruined by damp rather than cold. A cover needs to shed rain and still let moisture out, because a fully sealed cover traps condensation against the frame and does the damage it was bought to prevent. Look for a breathable fabric, a drawstring or strap that stops the cover lifting, and vents. Cushions are best brought in or stored dry, and a storage box that doubles as a seat solves that without another thing to find room for.
The order things fail in is fairly predictable, and it is worth knowing before you spend. Cushions go first, then fabric canopies, then coatings on cheaper metalwork, then the frames themselves. That is an argument for buying frames well and treating cushions and canopies as parts you will replace, rather than paying a premium for a set whose fabric is no more durable than anyone else's.
Small gardens, balconies and awkward shapes
A small space rewards furniture that does more than one thing. A storage box that takes cushions and works as a bench, a bistro set that folds against a wall, a fire table that is a low table for most of its life. On a balcony, weight and access are the constraints nobody thinks about until delivery day, so check what your building allows and how the pieces come up. Planters do more for a hard-surfaced space than extra seating does, and they can be moved when you want the floor back. Where a garden is long and narrow, arranging two smaller groups rather than one large one makes it read as two rooms instead of a corridor.
Filtering the range
Use the filters to work by size band, material, colour and style, and on the shade pages by parasol type, which separates cantilever from centre-pole in one click. Sizes are grouped into bands rather than listed in centimetres, so a four-seat table and a six-seat table sit in different groups even where their measurements are close. Material is the filter worth starting from if upkeep matters to you, since it decides how much of your time the furniture will ask for. Style is the one to start from if you are matching something you already own.
If you are furnishing from scratch, work outwards in this order: the seating or table that sets the scale, then shade sized to it, then the base that holds the shade steady, then cushions and a cover. Buying in that order avoids the common false economy of a parasol too small for the table and a base too light for the parasol. If the budget will not stretch to all of it at once, buy the frame and the shade properly and add cushions and covers next season, because those are the parts you can upgrade later without replacing anything. Measure the space once, properly, before any of it, because almost every regret in a garden scheme is a size problem rather than a taste one.
