Description
The Norfolk is a traditional coach-style outdoor wall light with a built-in PIR motion sensor, finished in black powder-coated aluminium with five hand-leaded glass panels forming the lantern enclosure. The light mounts on a curved bracket and faces upward, directing light through the leaded glass roof and out through the side panels. An E27 bulb fitting accepts standard Edison screw bulbs up to 60W (sold separately).
Designed for front doors, side gates, driveways and garden paths where motion-activated lighting improves security and wayfinding after dark, the Norfolk combines a passive infrared sensor with an IP44 weatherproof rating suitable for all UK outdoor conditions. The PIR sensor detects movement within its range and automatically switches the light on for a preset duration (adjustable on most PIR units), then turns it off when motion ceases, reducing energy use compared to dusk-to-dawn photocell operation.
The hand-leaded glass uses traditional leadwork techniques to join five clear glass panels within a metal caming framework, creating the diamond lattice pattern visible in the lantern sides. This leaded construction is typical of Victorian and Edwardian coach lights and suits period properties, cottage-style homes and driveways where a heritage aesthetic is preferred over contemporary minimalism. The black finish on the aluminium body resists corrosion in coastal and high-humidity locations, and the 470mm overall height gives the fitting substantial presence when mounted at standard door-surround height (1.5-1.8m above ground level).
The upward-facing orientation means the light exits primarily through the top glazed panel, washing the wall above the fitting and reflecting downward to illuminate the immediate area below. This indirect wash produces less glare than a downward-facing lantern and better illuminates door numbers and entrance features mounted above the light. The 295mm projection from the wall ensures the lantern clears most door surrounds and drainpipes when side-mounted.

Frequently Asked
What bulb is recommended for this fitting?
The Norfolk takes a standard E27 Edison screw bulb up to 60W. Most users pair it with a warm-white LED bulb rated at 6-10W and 2700K-3000K for security lighting that matches the traditional lantern style. Bulbs are sold separately.
How does the PIR sensor work?
The passive infrared sensor detects movement within its detection range and automatically switches the light on for a preset duration (typically 30 seconds to 5 minutes, adjustable on installation). When no further movement is detected, the light switches off automatically, conserving energy compared to lights that stay on all night.
Is it suitable for coastal locations?
The IP44 rating protects against splashing water from any direction, and the black powder-coated aluminium body resists corrosion in humid and coastal environments. The leaded glass panels are sealed to prevent moisture ingress into the lamp chamber.
Can it be mounted beside a front door?
Yes. The 295mm projection from the wall ensures the lantern clears most standard door surrounds and drainpipes. Mount the fitting at 1.5-1.8m above ground level for optimal PIR detection and to illuminate the entrance area effectively.
