Track Spotlights

Track spotlights fit onto a powered track so you can place light where you need it, and we stock them for kitchens, living rooms, hallways and commercial spaces. Most have integrated LED and are made for accent lighting, while many take a GU10 lamp. Most are metal and most are black, with many in white, brass or gold. Almost all are rated IP20, for dry indoor rooms.

Which track spotlights will fit your track?

Track spotlights take their power from a track rather than each being wired in on its own. That is what makes them so flexible: once the track is in place, heads can be added or moved along the run without rewiring, so the lighting can change as a room does.

Before you choose a style, check your track system. Single-circuit, multi-circuit and magnetic tracks each take their own type of head, and a head made for another system will not normally fit yours, even where the tracks look alike. Compare the details on the listing with your track, or with the track you plan to buy, and if you are unsure which system you have, get in touch and we will help you match it.

Integrated LED or GU10 track spotlights?

Most of our track spotlights have integrated LED, with the light source built into the head. That keeps heads compact and leaves no bulb to change. Many take a GU10 lamp instead, which lets you replace the bulb or swap to a warmer or cooler tone later.

If you choose a lamp-based head, check whether a lamp comes with it, and match any replacement to its fitting. For brightness, lumens are a better guide than watts where a listing gives them. Think too about beam: a narrow beam picks out a single picture or shelf, while a wider beam spreads light across a worktop or display.

Warm white, cool white or daylight track spotlights?

Most of our track spotlights give warm white light, a cosy tone. Many give cool white or daylight instead, which looks crisper over a kitchen worktop, a desk or a shop display, and many give a gentle soft white. Many also let you adjust the colour temperature, so a single head can move from a cooler working light to a warmer evening tone.

Many of our track spotlights are dimmable, but many are not, so check the listing before you buy, and pair a dimmable head with a compatible dimmer, which your electrician can choose for your circuit. We also stock smart-home track spotlights; check the listing to see how each is controlled before you plan your set-up.

Where do track spotlights work best?

Most of our track spotlights are made for accent lighting, picking out the things you want seen rather than lighting a room evenly. Most suit commercial spaces such as shops and showrooms, where the light needs to follow a changing display. Many suit kitchens, where a track over an island or along a run of worktops puts light where you prepare food. Many suit living rooms, where heads can pick out pictures, shelves or a reading chair, and many suit hallways.

Some suit studies or dining rooms, and we stock a few for ambient or task lighting. In a kitchen, set the track a little in front of where you stand, so your own shadow does not fall across the worktop. In a hallway, evenly spaced heads give a steady line of light along its length.

Which finish and size of track spotlights suit your space?

Most of our track spotlights are black, a finish that looks sharp against a white ceiling. Many come in white, which blends into a pale ceiling, and many in brass or gold for a warmer look. A few of our track spotlights come in grey, chrome, silver or bronze. Keeping heads and track in the same finish gives a tidy run, while a contrasting finish can mark out a zone such as a kitchen island.

Most are metal, and most are aluminium, which keeps heads lightweight. Most heads are small and neat, so they sit on a track without crowding the ceiling, but we also stock larger fittings, which keep in proportion with a high or open space. Most carry a single head, many have twin heads, and a few hold far more lights. Measure your track and ceiling height before you choose.

How to fit and position track spotlights

Connecting a track to your mains supply is a job for a qualified electrician, who can also tell you whether the work is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. Once the track is live, always switch off the power before you add, move or remove a head, and follow the instructions for your track system.

Position heads so the light lands on the surface or object you want to show, not into people's eyes. Where a head can be angled, aim it away from seats and doorways, and light glazed pictures from the side to cut reflections. Almost all of our track spotlights are rated IP20, for dry indoor areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are track spotlights?

A track spotlight is a spotlight that takes its power from a track, a rail on the ceiling or wall that carries the supply, rather than being wired in at a single point. Heads can be placed along the run wherever you need light, so you can pick out a worktop, a picture or a display and change the layout later without rewiring.

Will these track spotlights fit my existing track?

Only if the head is made for your track system. Single-circuit, multi-circuit and magnetic tracks take different heads, so compare the listing with your track before you order, and get in touch if you are not sure which system you have.

Do track spotlights have built-in LED or take a bulb?

Most of ours have integrated LED, so there is no bulb to replace. Many take a GU10 lamp, and there are also a few GX53 or E27 fittings; check the listing to see whether a lamp is supplied with the head.

Are track spotlights dimmable?

Many of ours are, but by no means all, so check the details of each head first. A dimmable head also needs a compatible dimmer, and your electrician can advise on the right type for your circuit.

How many track spotlights do I need?

That depends on the length of your track and what you want to light. Over a worktop, allow enough heads for the pools of light to overlap slightly, and for pictures or displays, plan a head for each piece you want to pick out.

Do I need an electrician to fit track spotlights?

For the track itself, yes: wiring it into your mains supply is work for a qualified electrician, who will know whether it needs notifying under Part P in England and Wales. Once it is in, turn the power off at the consumer unit whenever you add or move a head.

Can I use track spotlights in a bathroom?

Almost all of ours are rated IP20, which is for dry indoor rooms. In a bathroom, any fitting near water needs a rating suited to its zone, IP44 or above, so ask your electrician which zone applies before you plan track lighting there.
