Black Flush Ceiling Lights

Our black flush ceiling lights all sit tight to the ceiling with no drop, keeping headroom clear wherever a hanging shade would get in the way. We stock designs in metal, glass and wood. Most run on an integrated LED, and many take a standard E27 screw bulb instead. If you are lighting a bathroom, choose one rated IP44 and keep the rest for dry rooms.

Where a black flush ceiling light works best

A flush fitting mounts straight onto the ceiling with no drop, which makes it the sensible choice wherever headroom is tight. In a low hallway or on a landing, it lights the space without anyone ducking under a shade. In a kitchen, nothing hangs down over the worktops, and in a bedroom it keeps the ceiling tidy above the bed.

Against a white ceiling, black gives a crisp outline, and it ties in with black switches, door handles and picture frames. If you would prefer a fitting that hangs lower, look at our semi-flush ceiling lights and pendant lights.

Sizing a black flush light for your room

Start with the size of the room. A compact fitting is enough for a narrow hallway, a landing or a box room, while a living room or open-plan kitchen needs a wider disc or ring to carry light into the corners. In a long room, a pair of fittings spaced along the ceiling gives more even light than a single large one.

Measure your space and compare it with the dimensions on the listing before you order, and judge brightness by the lumen figure rather than the wattage. Some are multi-light fittings, which spread light in more directions. An opal or frosted diffuser gives a soft, even light, while clear glass lets more light through and adds a little sparkle.

Warm or cool white from a black flush light

Most give a warm white light. Warm white feels relaxed in bedrooms, living rooms and hallways, and at 2700K it is close to the glow of an old filament bulb, with 3000K a touch whiter. Cool white, around 4000K, looks crisper and suits a kitchen, study or utility room. We stock cool white and daylight options too.

Some let you change the colour temperature yourself, so the same fitting suits a busy morning and a quiet evening. Many are dimmable, which is useful in a bedroom or living room at night. If you want to dim, check the listing to see what the fitting needs, as a standard switch will not dim it.

Bulbs for black flush ceiling lights

Most have an integrated LED built into the fitting, so there is no separate bulb to buy. If you would rather choose your own bulb, many take an E27 screw bulb, a common cap that is easy to find in warm or cool white and in dimmable versions.

Some take GU10 spotlight bulbs, handy if you already use them elsewhere in the house. A few of our fittings take G9 capsules, small bulbs that push straight into the holder. A few take an E14 cap, the small screw fitting common on candle bulbs. Before you buy, match the cap to any bulbs you plan to reuse, and check the listing to see whether a bulb is included.

Black flush lights in bathrooms

A bathroom calls for a fitting protected against splashing water, and we stock black flush lights rated IP44. For a bathroom or en suite, choose one of those, and ask your electrician where in the room it can go, as the rules depend on how close it sits to the bath or shower.

Most are rated IP20, which means they belong in dry rooms. Hallways, bedrooms, living rooms and studies count as dry rooms, and you should treat any fitting without an IP44 rating as a dry-room light. Whichever you choose, we recommend that a qualified electrician fits it, checks the fixing is secure and confirms whether it needs an earth connection.

Caring for a black flush ceiling light

A black finish shows dust more readily than white, so a quick clean now and then keeps it looking crisp. Many have a matt finish, which cuts down reflections but can mark if it is rubbed hard. Some have a satin finish with a gentle sheen. Like any finish, black can scratch, so treat it gently.

To clean one, switch it off at the wall and let it cool. Dust the black parts with a soft dry cloth, and avoid anything abrasive, any solvent and spray polish. Where black is paired with brass or chrome, keep metal polish off those details, as it can smear onto the black. Give a glass diffuser the same gentle wipe.

Matching wall lights to a black flush light

A black flush light is easy to build a scheme around. In an open-plan room, it sits comfortably alongside black pendant lights over a dining table or kitchen island. In a hallway, add black wall lights along the length of the space and keep the finish consistent so the fittings read as a set. Some of the fittings on this page can also go on a wall, which makes an exact match simple.

Many pair black with brass, chrome or white, so pick up that accent colour in your switches, handles or other lights. We stock modern, industrial and traditional designs too, to suit the character of the room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a flush ceiling light a good choice for a low ceiling?

Yes, that is what a flush fitting is for. Every light on this page sits tight to the ceiling with no drop, so headroom stays clear. If you want a light that hangs down, our semi-flush ceiling lights and pendant lights suit higher ceilings better.

Do these lights come with a bulb?

Most have an integrated LED, so you will not need to buy a bulb. If the fitting you like takes a bulb, check its listing to see whether one is included.

Will my bayonet bulbs fit?

Only a few take a B22 bayonet bulb. Many take an E27 screw bulb instead, so check the cap on the listing before you reuse your old bulbs.

Can I use a black flush ceiling light in a bathroom?

Yes, as long as you choose one rated IP44, and we stock many of those. Ask your electrician where in the bathroom it can go, and keep all the others on this page for dry rooms.

Are these lights dimmable?

Many are dimmable and many are not, so check the listing before you connect one to a dimmer switch. If the fitting takes a bulb, it will need a dimmable bulb as well.

Will the light be warm or cool white?

Most give a warm white light, the softer and more relaxed choice. Warm white suits living rooms and bedrooms, and our cool white and daylight options suit kitchens and studies. Some have an adjustable colour temperature, so you can set it yourself.

Will a black fitting make my room feel darker?

Not in itself. The light comes from the LED or bulb inside, so check the lumen figure on the listing to compare brightness. If you would like a lighter look on a pale ceiling, many pair black with white.
