Gig bag or hard case?

A gig bag is lighter, easier to carry on public transport and fits in a car boot alongside everything else. It protects against rain, dust and the ordinary knocks of getting to a venue. A hard case protects against being sat on, stacked under other equipment or handled by an airline. If your instrument only travels between home and a rehearsal room, a good padded bag is enough. If it goes in a van with other people gear, or flies, buy the hard case.

Padding, and where it matters

Padding thickness is usually quoted in millimetres, and more is better up to the point where the bag becomes unwieldy. What matters more is where it is placed. On a guitar bag, the headstock and the lower bout take the impacts, so check those are reinforced rather than assuming even padding throughout. On a keyboard bag, the ends take the damage. On a speaker cover, the corners go first.

Guitars: shape and scale

Guitar bags are cut to a shape, so an electric bag will not properly hold a dreadnought and a classical bag is a different outline again. Check the bag is described for your body shape, and if you play a longer scale bass or an offset body, confirm the internal length rather than trusting the category name. A bag that is slightly too large is safer than one that is tight, since forcing a zip is how headstocks get damaged.

Keyboards, drums and cables

Keyboard bags are sized by key count, so a 61 key bag will not take an 88 key instrument. Drum bags are usually sold in sets by drum diameter and depth, and it pays to measure rather than assume, particularly with deeper modern shells. For cables and small items, a heavy duty holdall or a moulded case with dividers keeps everything findable, which saves far more time at a load-in than it sounds.

Straps, zips and wear points

Zips fail before fabric does, so look for chunky zips with a storm flap over them rather than the lightest option. Padded backpack straps make a real difference if you walk to gigs, and a grab handle at both the side and the end lets you load a boot without turning the instrument over. Check the stitching where straps meet the body, since that is where a heavily loaded bag gives way.
