About Halo Design
Halo Design was founded in 1994 by the Danish entrepreneur Michael Waltersdorff, and the company still works from Farum, just north of Copenhagen. The house style is Scandinavian minimalism: clean shapes, honest materials and light that suits a room rather than dominating it. The aim from the start was original lighting that stays affordable, and that balance runs through the whole range. What you get is considered Danish design at prices well below the studio names, with opal glass, brushed metal, oak and antique brass used across whole families of fittings, so a pendant, a wall light and a table lamp from the same range share one language and sit together in a room.
Rechargeable and portable lamps
The rechargeable lamps are the part of this range we would point at first. A cordless lamp runs on a built-in battery, so it can sit on a dining table, a windowsill or a shelf with no socket nearby, then move outside for an evening on the patio. Halo Design build these across the Hygge, Stepp, Moon Light and Lumen families, with dimmable steps that stretch the runtime when you want a softer glow. Most charge over USB in a few hours. Because there is no trailing flex they suit places where a cord would be awkward or unsafe, and they are genuinely useful in a rented flat where you cannot move the wiring.
Pendants, chandeliers and ceiling lights
Suspended fittings are the largest part of the range. Pendants run from small opal glass globes of around 14cm up to wide shades with over a metre of drop, in ranges such as Bubbles, Candy, Paris, Toscana, Stockholm and Metropole. Several are sold as cable sets, so you can hang a shade you already own or set the drop yourself, and multi-light versions group two or three heads over an island or a dining table. The chandeliers are the multi-arm designs, mostly six or more G9 lamps on the Atom and Tilt frames. Flush and semi-flush ceiling fittings cover hallways, landings and rooms with lower ceilings, where a long drop would simply be in the way.
Table lamps and floor lamps
Table lamps here run from small bedside fittings to wide opal shades for a sideboard, while the floor lamps split between reading lights with an adjustable head and taller uplighters that wash a corner. The Vegas floor lamps come in one-arm and two-arm versions on flexible goosenecks, so you can aim light at a book rather than at the wall, and the two-arm version lets two people read from one lamp. Angora, Berlin, Medina and Baroni cover the more architectural shapes. Where a lamp takes a standard screw or bayonet cap you can change the bulb later to suit the room, which is usually cheaper than replacing a whole integrated fitting.
Wall lights and the Halo Track system
Wall fittings cover picture and reading lights, up-and-down washers, and flush plates for hallways and stairs. The Halo Track system is worth a separate look. It is a single-circuit rail in 1.2m and 2m lengths, in black or white, with spot heads that clip on anywhere along it and move as your layout changes. Connectors, right angles and three-way and four-way pieces let you turn corners or build an L or a cross, and a pendant adaptor lets you hang a shade from the same rail. That makes it a sensible choice over a kitchen island or a run of shelving, where you may well want to re-aim the light a year from now.
Colors light bulbs
Colors is Halo Design's own light bulb range, and it is broad. It covers the everyday screw and bayonet caps alongside G9, GU10, G4 and E14, in globe, golf ball, candle, tube and filament shapes. A good number are three-step dimmable, which means you cycle through brightness levels from the ordinary wall switch with no dimmer module fitted, which is useful in a rented flat or on an older circuit. Others dim in the normal way, and a dimmable lamp still needs a compatible dimmer to run without flicker. Warm white suits living rooms and bedrooms, while cooler tones read better in kitchens and workspaces. The decorative print and coloured glass bulbs are made to be looked at rather than hidden inside a shade.
Cables, sockets, shades and spare parts
Halo Design also sell the component parts, which is less common than it should be and genuinely useful. Fabric and silicone cable comes on 25m rolls, and there are E27 and E14 sockets in porcelain, metal and plastic, ceiling roses, canopies for one or three pendants, swan necks and bare shades. That means you can build a pendant to a length that suits your ceiling, replace a worn socket instead of a whole fitting, or convert a single pendant into a three-light canopy over a table. It also means a fitting stays repairable, which matters more now than it did a few years ago. If you are not sure which parts fit together, our team can check before you order.
Choosing Halo Design lighting
Start with the job the light has to do. Warm white around 2700K to 3000K suits living rooms and bedrooms, while 4000K and above reads crisper in a kitchen, bathroom or workspace. Check a pendant's drop against your ceiling height and the table beneath it, and check the cap type if you want the option of changing bulbs later. Most of these fittings are IP20 and belong indoors, so keep anything near a basin or outside to a properly rated version. Opal glass and matt metal wipe clean with a dry cloth. Where a fitting is dimmable, pair it with a compatible dimmer. We ship Halo Design worldwide, with free delivery worldwide on all orders over £99.
