COB LED Strip Lights

COB LED strip lights replace the row of separate diodes you see on older tape with a single, continuous line of light, so there are no visible dots or hotspots along the run. The dense chip-on-board coating gives an even glow that suits under-cabinet runs, cove detailing and shelf edges. Each reel cuts to length at marked points and runs from a low-voltage driver.

What makes COB different from a standard LED strip?

A COB (chip-on-board) strip packs its diodes tightly beneath a single phosphor coating, so the light reads as one unbroken line rather than a row of separate points. On a spaced-diode SMD strip you can often pick out the individual dots, especially through a diffuser or when the strip sits close to the eye; a COB run hides them, which is why it looks so clean along an exposed worktop or shelf edge. The trade-off is a slightly denser, more even wash rather than pin-sharp points of light. If you are weighing the two formats against each other, the wider LED strip lights range puts both side by side.

Cutting and joining to length

Every reel is printed with cut points at regular intervals, usually every few centimetres, and you trim only on those marks so each section keeps a complete circuit. An offcut is not wasted: it can be rejoined with a solderless clip or a soldered link, so one reel might wrap a kitchen run with the remainder used on a stair or a cabinet. Plan the layout so each length lands on a marked point, and keep bends gentle along the flat of the tape rather than twisting it. Connectors, end caps and joiners are grouped in LED strip accessories.

Powering a COB strip

COB tape is low voltage and runs on a 12V or 24V DC driver rather than straight from the mains, so on its own it is never wired into a wall socket. Size the driver to the total wattage of the length you fit, allowing a little headroom, and add the lengths together when more than one piece runs from the same supply. A longer run may need feeding from both ends to keep the far end as bright as the near end. Matching power supplies sit in LED drivers.

Mounting and hiding the source

An aluminium channel protects the tape, draws heat away to help it last, and gives a tidy edge, while a frosted cover blends the line into a soft band. Surface, recessed and corner profiles let you tuck the strip into joinery, run it along a ceiling shadow gap, or angle it down over a worktop. Fixing the tape to a clean, dry, dust-free surface helps the adhesive hold for the long term. The common shapes are gathered in our LED profiles range.

Where COB strip works best

The even, low-profile glow suits under-cabinet task lighting, cove and coffer detailing, shelf and display edges, stair runs and skirting accents. Because it is a linear source, plan around the length of the run and the surface it washes rather than lighting a whole room to a set level. Dry indoor positions are happy with an IP20 strip; for a bathroom zone or a sheltered outdoor run, choose a coated IP65 version that shrugs off moisture.

Choosing brightness and colour

Output is quoted per metre, so check the watts and lumens per metre for the level you want, and the colour temperature for the mood: warm white for living spaces, cool white for kitchens and workshops, daylight for display and close detail work. A higher colour-rendering figure keeps finishes, food and skin tones looking true. We hand-pick COB strips across these tones and densities, and we ship orders over £99 free within the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a COB LED strip?

It is a flexible reel of light where the diodes sit tightly under one phosphor coating, giving a continuous, dot-free line instead of the visible points you get on a spaced-diode SMD strip. The result is an even glow that looks clean along an exposed edge.

Do COB LED strips need a driver?

Yes. COB tape is low voltage and runs on a 12V or 24V DC driver, not straight from the mains. Size the driver to the total wattage of the run you fit, with a little headroom, and order it alongside the strip unless it is sold as a kit.

Can a COB strip be cut to length?

Yes. Each reel is marked with cut points every few centimetres, and you trim only on those marks so the section keeps working. The offcut can be rejoined with a clip or soldered connector and used elsewhere.

Can COB strip be used outdoors?

Only the coated IP65 versions. A standard IP20 strip is for dry indoor positions, so check the IP rating before fitting: choose IP65 for bathrooms, sheltered outdoor runs and other damp spots.
