What makes COB different from a standard LED strip?

A COB (chip-on-board) strip packs its diodes tightly beneath a single phosphor coating, so the light reads as one unbroken line rather than a row of separate points. On a spaced-diode SMD strip you can often pick out the individual dots, especially through a diffuser or when the strip sits close to the eye; a COB run hides them, which is why it looks so clean along an exposed worktop or shelf edge. The trade-off is a slightly denser, more even wash rather than pin-sharp points of light. Cutting and joining to length

Every reel is printed with cut points at regular intervals, usually every few centimetres, and you trim only on those marks so each section keeps a complete circuit. An offcut is not wasted: it can be rejoined with a solderless clip or a soldered link, so one reel might wrap a kitchen run with the remainder used on a stair or a cabinet. Plan the layout so each length lands on a marked point, and keep bends gentle along the flat of the tape rather than twisting it. Powering a COB strip

COB tape is low voltage and runs on a 12V or 24V DC driver rather than straight from the mains, so on its own it is never wired into a wall socket. Size the driver to the total wattage of the length you fit, allowing a little headroom, and add the lengths together when more than one piece runs from the same supply. Mounting and hiding the source

An aluminium channel protects the tape, draws heat away to help it last, and gives a tidy edge, while a frosted cover blends the line into a soft band. Because it is a linear source, plan around the length of the run and the surface it washes rather than lighting a whole room to a set level. Dry indoor positions are happy with an IP20 strip; for a bathroom zone or a sheltered outdoor run, choose a coated IP65 version that shrugs off moisture.
