What a night light is for
A night light gives just enough soft light to move safely after dark without turning on a bright overhead fixture. It marks the way to a bathroom, lights a landing or stair edge, and reassures a child settling to sleep. The key is low, warm, glare-free light: enough to see by, not enough to wake you fully or stop you dropping back off. We hand-pick our night light range from specialist makers we work with directly, choosing designs that give a gentle glow rather than a harsh point of light. For softer bedside light a step up from a night light, see our bedside lamps range.
Plug-in night lights and sensor options
A plug-in night light fits straight into a wall socket and needs no wiring, which makes it the simplest option for a landing, hallway or child's bedroom. Many include a dusk-till-dawn sensor that switches the light on automatically as the room darkens and off again at daybreak, so it only runs when needed. Others use a motion sensor that triggers as you pass, useful on a stair or in a hallway at night. Some are removable and double as a soft torch. Plug-in designs suit any room with a spare socket near the spot you want to light.
LED night lights: warm light and low running cost
Almost every night light now uses LED, and for good reason: an LED night light draws tiny amounts of power, stays cool to the touch even after running all night, and lasts for years without a lamp change. That low power draw means it costs very little to leave on from dusk to dawn. The lamps in this range lean towards warm, amber-leaning white, which is the kindest tone for sleep because it carries less of the blue light that can keep you alert. Cool, bright night lights exist, but warm output is the better choice in a bedroom or nursery.
Night lights for children's rooms, bedrooms and landings
Placement decides the kind of night light you want. In a child's room, a soft, warm plug-in light or a glowing character light reassures without lighting the whole room, and a dusk-till-dawn sensor saves switching it on and off. On a landing or stair, a sensor light that triggers on movement marks the edges safely for anyone up in the night. In a main bedroom, a low plug-in light near the door or a dim bedside glow covers night trips without waking a partner; our bedroom lights and hallway lighting ranges cover the wider fixtures for those rooms. For a brighter bedside option than a night light, see our table lamps range.
