The Espire alarm range
Espire covers the essentials of domestic fire and carbon monoxide safety: optical smoke alarms, heat alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and multi-sensor units that combine two forms of detection in one housing. Alongside the alarms sit the parts that turn them into a system — RF interlink modules, relay and RF relay bases, remote controllers, and fitting accessories such as masking plates and installation tools. The alarms are finished in white, and most are designed to be fitted once and left in place for their full working life, with no routine battery changes to manage.
Smoke, heat or carbon monoxide — which alarm goes where
Optical smoke alarms are the standard choice for escape routes, landings and living areas, where detecting smoke early matters most. Heat alarms suit kitchens, garages and lofts, where cooking fumes, dust or steam would cause a smoke alarm to sound falsely — they respond to a rise in temperature instead of smoke. Carbon monoxide alarms belong wherever there is a fuel-burning appliance, such as a boiler, stove or open fire, since carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless and cannot be detected without one. Where you want to cover more than one risk from a single point, the multi-sensor units pair smoke-and-heat or carbon-monoxide-and-heat sensing in one alarm.
Sealed 10-year or mains-powered
Most of the range runs on a sealed, non-replaceable 10-year lithium battery, so there are no batteries to change and no wiring to run — you fit the alarm and it works for its full service life. The mains-powered models run from a 230V supply with a 10-year lithium backup, keeping cover through a power cut, and suit new-build and rewiring projects where a fixed supply is specified. A small number of mains models use a replaceable 9V backup battery in place of the sealed cell. Whichever you choose, the sensing and interlinking work the same way.
Interlinking — wireless and wired
Interlinked alarms sound together, so a warning triggered downstairs is heard upstairs — a legal requirement in Scotland and sensible practice in any home with more than one floor. Espire alarms interlink wirelessly over RF once you add the ES1RF or ES1RF2 module, connecting up to 28 devices at a range of around 100m in open field. The mains models also support traditional hardwired interconnect between units. However they are linked, when one alarm in the group detects smoke, heat or carbon monoxide, every alarm in the group sounds.
Standards and installation grades
The range is built for installation in homes to BS 5839-6, the British Standard covering fire detection and alarm systems in domestic premises. Battery-powered alarms carry a Grade F rating and mains-powered alarms a Grade D rating, and the installation grade — for example F1 or D1 — sets out where and how the alarm should be fitted for a given property. If you are specifying for a rented home or a new build, check the grade of system the property is required to have before you choose.
Modules and accessories
Beyond the alarms, the range includes the parts that complete an installation. RF modules add wireless interlinking to the alarms, while relay and RF relay bases let a triggered alarm switch an external device such as a warning light or auto-dialler. Remote controllers and control switches let you test and silence a linked system from one point, and fitting accessories — masking plates to keep alarms clean during building work, and multi-tools for installation — cover the practical side of getting a system in and maintained.
