What is an addressable LED strip?
On an ordinary strip, the whole run shows one colour and brightness at a time. On an addressable strip, a tiny driver chip controls each diode or short segment on its own, so the run can show many colours at once or send light travelling along its length. That per-pixel control is what unlocks chasing, fading, rainbow and reactive effects. If you only want a single steady colour or white, a standard tape from the LED strip lights range is simpler and cheaper; choose addressable when movement is the point.
What you need to run one
An addressable strip needs two things beyond the tape itself: a low-voltage DC supply sized to the run, and a controller that speaks the strip's pixel protocol. The controller sets the patterns, whether through a remote, an app or a wider smart system, so it is worth matching it to how you want to drive the lights. RGB, white and effects
Full-colour versions mix red, green and blue per pixel for the whole spectrum, and some add a dedicated white channel for cleaner whites alongside colour. Single-white addressable strips keep one tone but still animate, so you can run a gentle wave or a sequenced fade without any colour at all. Brightness is set per pixel as well as colour, so an effect can ripple from dim to bright as it travels, and many controllers store several scenes you can switch between for everyday light or a party. The effect you get depends as much on the controller as the tape, so think about the patterns you want before you buy.
Cutting, joining and mounting
Like other tape, an addressable strip cuts at marked points and rejoins with the right connector, but there is one extra rule: the data flows one way along the run, marked by an arrow, so connectors and any added sections must follow that direction. Keep the first pixel nearest the controller and work outward. Connectors, end caps and channel are grouped in LED strip accessories.
Where addressable strip works
Per-pixel control suits feature walls and alcoves, media and gaming setups, shelving and display joinery, signage and bar fronts, and any spot where moving light adds life. Because each run can be programmed, the same tape can sit quiet and warm one evening and run a colour sequence the next, which makes it a flexible choice for spaces that change use. Power and planning
Check the watts per metre and the pixel density, then size the supply and controller to the full run with a little headroom.
