PA Amplifiers

Our range of PA amplifiers is built around 100V line distribution, which is how most shops, pubs, offices and yards are wired. Mixer amplifiers combine the amplifier, the source inputs and microphone priority in one rack or compact unit, so a single box runs background music and paging across the building. What a mixer amplifier does

A mixer amplifier folds three jobs into one chassis: it takes several inputs such as a microphone, a Bluetooth receiver and a music player, mixes them with individual level controls, then amplifies the result out to your speakers. In a commercial setting that is usually all the audio equipment a building needs, which is why these units dominate shop, pub and office installations. The alternative, a separate mixer feeding a power amplifier, only makes sense once the system grows past what one unit can handle.

Sizing the amplifier to your speakers

On a 100V line system, each speaker has a transformer with tap settings that decide how much power it draws. Add up the tap wattage of every speaker on the line, then choose an amplifier rated comfortably above that total, leaving roughly 20 per cent headroom. A system of twenty 6W ceiling speakers draws 120W, so a 240W amplifier gives room to add a zone later without starting again. Overloading the line will make the amplifier run hot and shorten its life.

Microphone priority and paging

Priority, sometimes called ducking or mute override, automatically lowers the music when a microphone input is used, then restores it afterwards. It is the single most useful feature in a retail or hospitality system, because it means an announcement does not require anyone to touch the volume. Check how many microphone inputs a unit has, whether phantom power is available, and whether the priority is triggered by the signal itself or by a contact closure from a paging microphone.

Zones and multi-zone control

Zoning lets you send music to the shop floor while keeping the stockroom quiet, or page one area without disturbing another. Some mixer amplifiers include separate zone outputs with their own volume controls, while others need external attenuators fitted on each speaker line. Decide early how many zones you want, because retrofitting them means running additional cable rather than changing a setting.

Sources: Bluetooth, USB and tuners

Many modern units include Bluetooth for streaming from a phone, and a few add USB or SD playback for background music that runs unattended, and an FM tuner. Bluetooth is convenient but ties the system to whoever last paired, so for a shop that opens daily a USB stick or a dedicated player is usually more practical. Check whether the unit remembers its settings after a power cut, since that saves a call-out.

Rack or compact?

Full size 19 inch units suit a rack in a back office and offer more inputs, more zones and easier servicing. Compact units fit a shelf or a cupboard and suit a single zone in a café or a small shop. Both do the same job, so let the space and the number of zones decide rather than the badge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a mixer amplifier?
One unit combining input mixing and amplification, so a microphone, Bluetooth and a music player can be mixed and sent straight out to the speakers. In most shop, pub and office installations it is the only audio box needed.

How do I size the amplifier for my speakers?
Add up the tap wattage set on every 100V line speaker, then choose an amplifier rated comfortably above that total with around 20 per cent headroom. Twenty 6W ceiling speakers draw 120W, so a 240W amplifier leaves room to expand.

What does microphone priority do?
It automatically lowers the music when a microphone is used and restores it afterwards, so announcements work without anyone touching the volume. Check whether it is triggered by the signal itself or by a contact closure from a paging microphone.

Can I control different areas separately?
Yes, either with a mixer amplifier that has separate zone outputs and volume controls, or with attenuators fitted on each speaker line. Decide how many zones you want early, since adding them later means running more cable.

Can I use a 100V line amplifier with normal 8 ohm speakers?
Many units offer both a 100V line output and a low impedance output, but not all. Check the specification, and never connect 8 ohm speakers to a 100V line output or the reverse, as neither will work correctly.

Do these amplifiers have Bluetooth?
Many do, and a few add USB or SD playback and an FM tuner. For a shop opening daily, a USB stick or dedicated player is often more practical than Bluetooth, which stays tied to the last device paired.
