The story of Mullan Lighting

Mullan Lighting was founded in 2009 by Mike Treanor, and he and his wife, Edel, are its directors. It is based in the old mill in Mullan Village, north of Monaghan town in County Monaghan, Ireland, and the village takes its name from an muileann, the Irish for the mill. The old mill was a flax mill in the nineteenth century and later a shoe factory. Mullan Lighting set up inside it in 2009, and the village's mill houses were restored.

In 2012 the company added vintage and industrial-style lighting to its traditional pub and church lighting, and began selling to the United Kingdom. Its ceramics followed in 2021, and its own ceramicists work in-house on designs, finishes and textures. Mullan Lighting designs and manufactures its lights in its own factory in the village, which gives it close control of quality.

Mullan pendant lights, wall lights and chandeliers

We stock many Mullan pendant lights and wall lights, with ceiling lights and chandeliers alongside them. Over a kitchen island or a dining table, pendant lights bring the light down to where you work and eat, and a row of them spreads it along the surface.

Wall lights add a softer layer of light at eye level, which suits a hallway, a landing or either side of a fireplace. Where headroom is limited, a ceiling light is usually a better choice than a pendant. Chandeliers suit a dining room or a hall with height, where you want the fitting itself to set the tone.

Mullan table lamps and picture lights

We stock many Mullan table lamps and picture lights. A table lamp on a sideboard, desk or bedside table puts light where you read or sit, while a picture light above a painting, mirror or run of shelves directs light down across it. Alongside them we stock a few floor lamps, which suit a reading chair. There are some spotlights as well, for picking out a beam or a worktop.

Brass, glass and ceramic from Mullan Lighting

We stock many Mullan lights made from brass, many with glass and many in ceramic. Brass suits a room with period features and warms up a plain one. Glass lets the light travel through the fitting, which suits a room you want evenly lit. Ceramic brings colour and texture to a fitting and sits well with simple furniture.

We also stock fittings in steel, aluminium and copper. For finishes and colours, we stock brass, black, grey, white, chrome, copper, bronze, red, blue, green and beige. A few fittings use rattan for a woven look. Match the finish to the switches and handles already in the room, and the lights will look as if they belong.

Bathroom and outdoor ratings on Mullan lights

A light's rating against water and dust settles where it can go. We stock many Mullan fittings rated against splashing water from any direction, and many with a higher rating, which means they are dust-tight and protected against jets of water. In a bathroom, the zone a light sits in sets the rating it needs, so check the product page and confirm the zone with your electrician.

We stock some lights made for outdoor use. Among them are a few outdoor wall lights, which suit a front door or a garden wall. There are a few outdoor sign lights too, for lighting a name board above a shop, a pub or a house. Any light outside should be fitted by a qualified electrician.

Bulb fittings on Mullan lights

Bulbs are sold separately, so check the product page, which gives the bulb fitting and its maximum wattage. The fitting settles which bulb you buy, and the maximum wattage tells you how powerful a bulb the fitting can safely take. We stock many Mullan fittings that take a large Edison screw bulb or a small capsule bulb with looped pins. Some take a small Edison screw bulb or a spotlight bulb with a push-and-twist base.

We also stock Mullan fittings with integrated LEDs, so it is worth confirming on the product page whether a light takes a bulb. Where the bulb is on show, a decorative filament bulb becomes part of the design.

Made to order by Mullan Lighting

Mullan Lighting makes its fittings to order, so it pays to plan ahead. Standard fittings usually arrive in three to five weeks and ceramic lights in five to seven weeks, because they are made once you place your order. If you are lighting a whole house, order the ceramic pieces first so they arrive alongside the rest.

Mullan Lighting's own guarantee covers the fittings it makes for five years from the date of purchase. The maker's guarantee does not cover bulbs, or components that come from outside suppliers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are Mullan lights made?

Mullan Lighting designs and makes its lights in-house, in its own factory in Mullan Village, County Monaghan, in Ireland. Founded in 2009, the company works from the village's old mill, which served as a flax mill in the nineteenth century before it became a shoe factory.

Do Mullan lights come with bulbs?

No, bulbs are sold separately and are never included. The product page gives the bulb fitting and its maximum wattage: many Mullan fittings take a large Edison screw bulb, and many take a small capsule bulb with looped pins.

How long does delivery take on Mullan Lighting?

Mullan Lighting makes its products to order. Standard fittings usually reach you in three to five weeks, and ceramic lights in five to seven weeks, so it is worth ordering early if you have a date in mind.

Is there a guarantee on Mullan lights?

Yes. Under its own guarantee, Mullan Lighting covers the fittings it makes for five years from the date of purchase. Bulbs, and components from outside suppliers, fall outside that guarantee.

Which Mullan lights can go in a bathroom or outdoors?

Look for the rating against water on the product page: we stock many Mullan fittings rated against splashing water, and many with a higher rating against jets of water. In a bathroom, your electrician can confirm which zone the light will sit in and the rating it needs. For the garden or the front of the house, we stock some lights made for outdoor use.

Can Mullan Lighting make a light to my own size or finish?

No. We sell the standard Mullan Lighting range as listed, so we cannot offer bespoke work, made-to-measure options or samples.

Do I need an electrician to fit a Mullan light?

We recommend a qualified electrician for any light wired into the mains, and especially for one going in a bathroom or outside. They can also check that your circuit and switch suit the fitting before it goes up.
