What a flight case actually protects against

Most damage is not a dramatic drop. It is the slow accumulation of knocks, a heavy item stacked on top, moisture from a wet load-out and connectors bent by cables pressing against them in a boot. A proper case protects against all four, which is why equipment kept in cases holds its value and equipment carried loose does not. If a piece of equipment is worth more than the case, the decision has already been made for you.

19 inch racks and rack units

Rack mounting equipment is measured in U, where one U is 1.75 inches of front panel height. Count the U of everything you intend to mount, then add one or two spare for cable access and airflow, because a tightly packed rack runs hot. Check the rack depth as well as the height, since a shallow case will not take a deep power amplifier, and connectors need clearance behind the unit for cable bends.

Moulded ABS, ply or aluminium?

Moulded ABS cases are light, water resistant and ideal for microphones, cables and smaller items, and the foam lining can often be cut to shape. Plywood cases with aluminium extrusion and butterfly catches are the traditional touring build, heavier but far stronger and repairable when a corner takes a hit. Aluminium framed cases sit in between. For weekly gigging, ply is the safer investment. For occasional transport of light items, ABS is enough.

Measuring before you buy

Measure the equipment itself, then allow for the knobs, handles and connectors that stick out beyond the chassis, since these are what get broken. For a rack case, confirm the internal depth rather than the external, and check whether the quoted depth is to the rear rails or to the inside of the lid. If you are casing a mixer with a sloped surface, check the internal height at the tallest point rather than the average.

Handles, wheels and lids

Recessed handles on both ends make a two person lift far safer than a single strap, and wheels are worth having on anything above about twenty kilograms, particularly if the venue has stairs or a long load-in. Removable lids at both front and rear are the difference between wiring a rack comfortably and doing it upside down in a corridor. Butterfly catches hold better than clips under vibration.

Packing and care

Pack heavy items low and secure anything that could shift, since a loose item inside a case does more damage than no case at all. Never coil cables around connectors that are still plugged in, and let equipment dry before closing a lid on it, as trapped moisture is what corrodes contacts. Check catches and rivets occasionally, because a case that pops open in transit is worse than one that never closed.
