Clips, holders and cradles

Microphone clips are not universal, and the wrong one either grips too loosely or will not take the barrel at all. Check the diameter of your microphone and whether the thread is the 5/8 inch standard used on most stands, since European stands sometimes use 3/8 inch and need an adaptor. A rubber isolated cradle costs a little more but stops handling noise and stand bumps travelling into the capsule, which is worth having on a lectern or a drum riser.

Windshields and pop filters

A foam windshield takes the edge off plosive sounds and keeps moisture off the capsule, which matters more than most people expect on a shared microphone. Outdoors, a thicker foam or a fur cover is the difference between usable speech and a rumble of wind noise. For close recorded vocals, a mesh pop filter mounted on the stand works better than foam, because it sits away from the capsule and does not dull the top end.

Phantom power supplies

If your mixer has no 48V phantom power, an inline supply lets you use a condenser microphone without changing the desk. One unit powers one channel, so count your condensers before ordering. Mute the channel before switching phantom power on or off, as the thump it makes can be hard on tweeters.

Spares for wireless systems

Wireless kit loses the same parts repeatedly: aerials, belt pack clips, battery covers and capsules. Aerials in particular are worth keeping spare, because a snapped one takes a receiver out of service for the sake of a small part. Capsules and connectors are brand specific, so note the model number of the transmitter before ordering rather than matching by appearance.

Cases and storage

Microphones fail from being knocked about far more often than from use. A padded case or a foam lined box keeps capsules apart and stops cables straining the connectors, and it makes it obvious when something has not come home from a job. For a system that travels weekly, a case with cut-outs for each item saves far more time than it costs.
