We stock galvanised steel boxes for chasing into masonry, PVC dry-lining boxes with retaining lugs for plasterboard and stud walls, and surface-mount pattress boxes where cable runs on the wall face. Depths run from shallow 16mm and 25mm boxes to deeper 35mm and 47mm versions for accessories with more wiring behind them.

Choosing the right box

Match the box to the wall and the accessory. Solid walls take a steel knockout box set into a chased recess, while plasterboard suits a dry-lining box that clamps to the board. Check the gang size, one-gang or two-gang, against the plate you are fitting, and allow enough depth for the wiring and any module behind the faceplate.

What is a back box?
A back box, or pattress box, is the metal or plastic enclosure fitted into or onto the wall that a socket or switch screws into. It holds the accessory securely and contains the wiring connections.

What is the difference between a steel and a dry-lining box?
A steel knockout box is set into a chased recess in a solid masonry wall. A dry-lining box is fitted into plasterboard or a stud wall and clamps to the board with retaining lugs, so it needs no fixings behind.

How do I know what depth box I need?
Shallow 16mm and 25mm boxes suit simple switches and sockets. Deeper 35mm and 47mm boxes give room for dimmers, USB sockets and other accessories with more wiring behind the plate.

What is a surface pattress box?
A surface pattress box mounts onto the wall face rather than being recessed, so cable can run on the surface. It is a quick option for garages, outbuildings and walls where chasing in is not practical.

Match the box gang size to the accessory: one-gang for a single socket or switch, two-gang for a double. Multi-gang and grid boxes suit larger plates carrying several modules.
