Description
This Knightsbridge 1-gang metal clad back box provides a 78mm x 78mm mounting surface with 44mm internal depth, manufactured from powder-coated premium grade steel. The box includes an integral earth terminal and carries an IP20 rating for protection against solid objects over 12.5mm diameter, making it suitable for surface-mounted industrial, workshop and outdoor electrical installations where flush mounting is not practical.
Designed for pairing with metal clad switches, sockets and accessories, the back box surface-mounts to walls, timber posts and concrete surfaces using the four corner fixing points. The 44mm depth accommodates standard single-gang wiring requirements including cable entry knockouts on all four sides and a bottom cable entry. The powder-coated finish resists corrosion in workshop environments and under light weather exposure when paired with appropriately rated accessories.
The steel construction provides mechanical protection for wiring in high-traffic areas, garages, outbuildings and light industrial spaces where surface wiring is preferred over chased-in installation. The box ships empty without a faceplate — pair it with any Knightsbridge metal clad 1-gang accessory (switches, sockets, isolation switches) to complete the installation. The 25-year warranty covers the back box itself; faceplate warranty terms depend on the accessory fitted.

Frequently Asked
What's the difference between a metal clad back box and a standard plastic back box?
Metal clad back boxes surface-mount to the wall and provide mechanical protection for the wiring and accessory, making them suitable for workshops, garages and industrial spaces. Standard plastic back boxes are designed to be flush-mounted into plasterboard or masonry and sit hidden behind the wall surface.
Does this come with a faceplate or switch?
No. The back box is sold empty. Pair it with any Knightsbridge metal clad 1-gang accessory (switch, socket, isolation switch) to complete the installation. The accessory faceplate fits over this box and secures with the fixing points provided.
Can this be used outdoors?
The back box itself carries an IP20 rating, which provides protection against solid objects but not water ingress. For outdoor use, pair it with a metal clad accessory that carries a higher IP rating (IP65 or IP66) to provide weather protection to the front face and cable entries.
How is it fixed to the wall?
The back box has four corner fixing points for screws or bolts. On masonry or brick, use wall plugs and screws. On timber, use wood screws directly. On metal surfaces, use self-tapping screws or bolts depending on the substrate thickness.
