Downlight Bezels & Trims

A downlight bezel is the visible trim ring that frames a recessed light, and changing it is the quickest way to update a ceiling without replacing the fitting. We hand-pick bezels and trims in polished chrome, brushed chrome, brass, matt black and white, in fixed and magnetic styles to suit popular downlight ranges.

What is a downlight bezel?

A downlight bezel is the visible trim ring that sits around the edge of a recessed downlight, covering the join between the fitting and the ceiling cut-out. It is the only part of most downlights you actually see once the light is in, so its finish sets the look of the whole ceiling. Many modern downlights now take a magnetic bezel that clips on over the light, so you can change the finish in seconds without touching the wiring or the light engine.

Because the bezel is a separate part, a chrome, brass, black or white ring can be fitted to the same downlight to match different rooms. Changing the bezel is the quickest and cheapest way to update recessed lighting when you redecorate.

Bezel, trim or ring? UK and US terms

The same part goes by several names. In the UK it is usually a downlight bezel; in the US and in some listings you will see downlight trim, recessed light trim or trim ring. They all describe the finishing ring around a recessed light. Where a bezel also shapes the light you may see an eyelid bezel, which shields the light to one side, or an anti-glare bezel, which sets the lamp deeper to cut glare. We list each part by the downlight range it fits so you can match the right one.

Fixed and magnetic bezels

There are two main fittings. A fixed bezel is part of, or screws to, the downlight and stays put. A magnetic bezel holds onto the light with built-in magnets, so it pulls off and changes by hand. Magnetic bezels are the easy choice for anyone who wants to refresh a finish later, while fixed bezels suit downlights that are already in with the trim built in. We hand-pick both, along with tilt bezels that let you angle the beam towards a wall or feature.

Finishes to match your room

We stock bezels in polished chrome, brushed chrome, matt black, white, polished brass, brushed brass and antique brass. White and matt black tend to sit back into the ceiling, while chrome and brass pick up the metalwork in taps, handles and switches. A warm brass bezel with warm white lamps gives a softer feel in living spaces; chrome or white with cool white suits kitchens and bathrooms.

Will it fit my downlight?

Bezels are not universal. Each one is made for a specific downlight range and cut-out size, so a bezel from one range will not always clip onto another. The two things to check are the downlight model it is listed for and the ceiling cut-out diameter, which is usually between 65mm and 90mm for standard fire-rated downlights. If you know the make and model of your existing light, match the bezel to that range. Where a light takes a magnetic bezel, only a magnetic bezel of the same range will hold.

Where to use them and how to fit

Downlight bezels are used anywhere recessed lights are fitted: kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and living rooms. For bathrooms, check the downlight and bezel carry the right IP rating for the zone. Fitting is simple. A magnetic bezel is offered up to the installed light and the magnets pull it home. A fixed bezel goes onto the downlight before the light is set into the ceiling. No rewiring is involved in changing a bezel, but if you are taking a downlight out to reach a fixed trim, isolate the circuit first and have the work checked by a competent person.

Caring for the finish

Wipe bezels with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners on plated finishes such as chrome and brass, as they can mark the surface. White bezels made from good-quality polycarbonate hold their colour well; very cheap trims can yellow near hot lamps, so pairing a white bezel with a cool-running LED downlight keeps it looking clean for longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a downlight bezel?

A downlight bezel is the visible trim ring around a recessed downlight that covers the gap between the fitting and the ceiling cut-out. It is the part you see once the light is in, so it sets the finish of the ceiling.

Are downlight bezels universal?

No. Each bezel is made for a specific downlight range and cut-out size, so a bezel from one range will not always fit another. Match the bezel to the make and model of your downlight and its cut-out diameter.

How do you fit or replace a downlight bezel?

A magnetic bezel is offered up to the installed light and held by its magnets, so it changes by hand. A fixed bezel is fitted to the downlight before the light goes into the ceiling. Changing a bezel needs no rewiring, but isolate the circuit before removing a light.

What is the difference between a fixed and a magnetic bezel?

A fixed bezel is built into or screwed to the downlight and stays in place. A magnetic bezel clips on with magnets and can be pulled off and swapped, which makes it easy to change the finish later.

Which bezel colour should I choose?

White and matt black sit back into the ceiling for a quiet look, while chrome and brass stand out a little and tie in with taps, handles and switches. Match the bezel to the metalwork in the room for a pulled-together finish.

Do white downlight bezels yellow over time?

Good-quality polycarbonate bezels hold their colour well. Very cheap trims can yellow near hot lamps, so pairing a white bezel with a cool-running LED downlight helps it stay clean and white.

Can you change a bezel without removing the downlight?

Yes, where the light takes a magnetic bezel you can pull off the old one and fit a new one by hand, with the light left in the ceiling. Fixed bezels need the downlight to be accessible to change the trim.
