Vintage Table Lamps

Vintage table lamps reproduce early-electric designs for a desk or a side table: bankers lamps with glass shades, brass columns, opal domes and enamel task lights. We stock them in aged brass, bronze and nickel, most taking a standard bulb so the lamp completes the period look.

What makes a table lamp vintage

A vintage table lamp reproduces a recognisable fitting from the early decades of electric light: a bankers lamp, a schoolhouse shade on a brass column, an enamel task light with a jointed arm. The tells are aged brass rather than chrome, opal or green glass, a visible lamp holder, and proportions that come from an office or a workshop rather than a drawing room. That origin is the useful thing about them: they were designed for somebody doing close work for hours at a time, so they light a surface better than most decorative lamps of the same size manage to.

Bankers, column and task shapes

The bankers lamp puts a green or opal glass shade on a low brass frame and is the most recognisable of the three; it throws light forward across a desk rather than down. A column lamp raises an opal dome or a fabric shade on a turned brass stem and suits a side table. A task lamp with a jointed arm and an enamel shade is the workshop version and is the most useful for actual work.

Glass, enamel and brass

Green cased glass is the bankers signature and softens the light noticeably. Opal gives an even glow and hides the lamp entirely. White enamel with a coloured rim came from factory fittings and throws a hard-edged pool downward. Aged brass and bronze are supplied with their patina and should be left alone; polish removes what you paid for.

Sizing and placement

On a desk, a bankers or task lamp wants to sit to the side of your writing hand so the shadow falls away from the page. On a side table, keep the lamp to no more than about one and a half times the table height, with the shade bottom near eye level when seated. Beside a bed, the shade bottom near eye height when sitting up keeps the lamp out of view.

Bulbs, and how much they change it

Where the lamp is visible, a filament LED in warm white around 2200K to 2700K is most of the effect. Behind opal, green or enamel glass the bulb is hidden, so choose on output instead: 6 to 8W of LED is comfortable for a desk. Check the cap on the page, as several of these designs take a smaller E14 rather than E27.

Switches and flexes

Check whether the switch is on the base, on the shade, a pull cord or inline on the flex, because it decides whether the lamp works where you want to put it. Braided flex is common on this style and is part of the look. For dimming, use a dimmable lamp with a plug-in or inline dimmer, since a table lamp is not wired to a wall dimmer.

Care and what will change

Dust brass dry and leave the patina. Glass shades lift or unscrew for cleaning and should be washed rather than wiped in place, particularly green cased glass which shows smears. Enamel chips at the rim, so support a shade when refitting it. Unlacquered brass darkens very slightly over years, which is intended, and it will darken faster where a hand rests on it, which is how these lamps were always meant to age. Green cased glass in particular shows every smear, so wash it rather than wiping it in place, and dry it before refitting so water does not sit in the gallery. Dry a glass shade fully before refitting it, so water does not sit trapped in the gallery and mark the brass beneath. That single habit keeps a bankers lamp looking right for years.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bankers lamp?

A low brass lamp with a green or opal glass shade that throws light forward across a desk. It is the most recognisable early-electric table lamp.

Are these lamps actually old?

No. They are new fittings in period styles, with modern wiring and current safety standards. The finishes are aged deliberately.

What bulb suits them?

A filament LED in warm white where the lamp is visible. Behind opal, green or enamel glass, a plain LED chosen on output.

Where should a desk lamp sit?

To the side of your writing hand, so the shadow of your hand falls away from the page.

Can I polish the brass?

We would not. Aged brass is supplied with its patina and polish removes it. Dust it dry instead.

Is the switch on the base?

It varies: base, shade, pull cord or inline on the flex. The product page states it, and it is worth checking before ordering.
