Description

The Knightsbridge 2-gang 35mm galvanised steel back box is a flush-mount electrical box manufactured from 1mm galvanised steel with a tolerance of +/- 1%. The box measures 132mm x 73mm x 35mm deep and accepts standard UK 2-gang switches, sockets and dimmer modules that require a 35mm minimum back box depth.

Designed for residential, commercial and light industrial installation, the box fits between standard 400mm or 600mm stud centres in stud walls, or can be chased into masonry and plasterboard where a flush finish is required. One fixed mounting lug sits at the top of the box, while one adjustable mounting lug allows the installer to compensate for minor alignment variations when fixing accessories to the box face. The earth terminal accepts protective earth continuity bonding between metal accessories and the installation's main earthing conductor.

The galvanised steel construction provides corrosion resistance in damp environments such as kitchens, utility rooms and bathrooms (provided the box itself is not directly exposed to water ingress). Multiple knockouts are pre-formed around the perimeter in 20mm and 25mm sizes, allowing cable entry from sides, top or bottom depending on the cable run. The box is certified to EN 60670 standards and carries a 25-year warranty.

What accessories fit this back box?

Any standard UK 2-gang switch, socket or dimmer module designed for a 35mm minimum back box depth will fit. This includes standard 2-gang light switches, 2-gang 13A sockets, USB sockets and dimmer modules. The 132mm x 73mm aperture is the UK standard for 2-gang accessories.

What wall construction is this suitable for?

The box fits stud walls between 400mm or 600mm centres, can be chased into masonry with a diamond cutter or SDS drill, and works in plasterboard installations using the mounting lugs to fix to noggins or direct plasterboard fixings. It is not suitable for surface mounting — that requires a different box type.

Does it need to be earthed?

Yes. The earth terminal must be connected to the installation's protective earth conductor. If the accessory being fitted is metal-fronted (e.g. a metal switch plate), that accessory's earth terminal should also bond to the back box earth terminal to maintain earth continuity.

What knockout sizes are available?

The box has pre-formed knockouts in 20mm and 25mm sizes around the perimeter. These are removed by twisting out with pliers or a screwdriver, allowing conduit or cable glands to be fitted for cable entry.
