Description

The Mercury 47mm surface mount back box is a single-gang electrical enclosure designed to sit on the wall surface rather than being recessed into it. The white thermoplastic housing measures 47mm deep, providing space for deeper modules, terminal blocks, or additional cable runs behind standard UK electrical faceplates. Moulded knockouts on the sides and rear allow cable entry without drilling.

Designed for installation where chasing walls for flush-mount boxes is impractical or impossible, the surface box suits masonry walls, solid concrete, tiled surfaces, or dry-lined partitions where cutting out a recess would compromise structural integrity. The box accepts any standard single-gang faceplate — switches, sockets, dimmers, data outlets — and the 47mm depth accommodates deeper plates with integrated USB ports or control modules.

The box is manufactured to BS EN60670-1, the British and European standard for electrical accessory boxes. The white finish blends with white or light-coloured faceplates, and the thermoplastic housing provides electrical insulation and impact resistance. Brass fixing lugs inside the box align with standard single-gang faceplate screw centres at 60.3mm apart.

Frequently Asked

What is a surface mount box used for?

A surface mount box sits on top of the wall rather than being recessed into it. It's used where cutting a recess is impractical — on tiled walls, solid concrete, thin partitions, or in retrofit installations where chasing walls would cause excessive disruption.

What faceplates are compatible with this box?

Any standard UK single-gang faceplate with 60.3mm screw centres will fit. This includes switches, sockets, dimmers, TV/data outlets, and USB charging faceplates. The 47mm depth accommodates deeper plates with integrated electronics.

How do cables enter the box?

The box has moulded knockouts on the sides and rear. Push through the knockout at the required entry point, and the cable feeds into the box through the resulting aperture. The knockouts eliminate the need to drill holes for cable entry.

Does the box need additional fixing to the wall?

Yes. The box is secured to the wall with screws through fixing holes moulded into the rear of the housing. Use appropriate fixings for the wall type — masonry plugs and screws for brick or concrete, plasterboard anchors for hollow walls.
