Description

Question is a table lamp in antique brass and opal. A conical opal glass shade, sharply tapered with a flat rim, hung from a brass knuckle at the top of a brass rod that sweeps over in one long curve. The rod is a slim round tube with no joints along it, polished and bright, and it enters a solid block of travertine that is left with its open pitting on show. The stone is a pale warm cream and is cut as a plain rectangular block with square edges. A small brass control sits on the top face of the stone. The glass, the brass and the stone are the whole of the lamp. It measures 31cm tall, in glass, metal and travertine.

It is a lamp for a side table, a desk or a bedside, close enough to reach the switch from where you sit, and it lights the surface it stands on rather than the whole room. A pair either side of a bed or a sofa reads as deliberate where one alone reads as an afterthought, and two smaller lamps light a room more evenly than one large one. The head tilts and holds where it is set, so the light is aimed by hand rather than by moving the whole fitting.

The LED is built in at 1.7W, so there is no bulb to buy and none to fit. It is rated IP20, for dry indoor rooms. It carries a G energy label. It runs on a 2000mAh battery and charges in about 3-4 hours, so it can be carried from room to room.

Do I need to buy a bulb?

No. The LED is built into the fitting, so there is nothing to buy and nothing to fit.

What happens when the LED fails?

The fitting is replaced rather than relamped. At 1.7W and normal domestic use that is many years away.

Can it go in a bathroom?

No. It is IP20, which covers dry interior rooms only. A bathroom needs IP44 or better.
