Opal white glass sits within a satin black surround here, a shallow disc that hugs the ceiling and spreads light evenly rather than throwing it in one direction. At 26cm across it reads as a modest circle from below, and the slim depth keeps it well clear of doors, wardrobe fronts and tall heads. It takes an E27 lamp, and we would reach for an LED GLS in a warm white for soft, glare free light through the glass. With a suitable lamp and dimmer on the circuit, the output can be taken down.

It is moisture resistant, so bathrooms, shower rooms and en suites are fair game, as are cloakrooms and utility rooms where splashes and steam are part of the day. We choose fittings like this for flats and cottages with low ceilings, where a pendant would hang in the way, and for hallways and landings that need light spread evenly from one end to the other. It suits anyone after something quiet and useful rather than showy, and the black trim gives a little definition against a white ceiling.

The glass is opal right through, so the lamp behind it stays hidden and the light arrives softened. The metalwork carries a low sheen satin black that does not show fingermarks the way a gloss would. Dust it with a dry cloth once the lamp is cool, and if the glass dulls in a steamy room, warm water on a soft cloth followed by a thorough dry will bring the brightness back. It measures 255mm in diameter and projects 105mm from the ceiling, so it stays tight to the surface in rooms with limited head height.

Which lamp should I use?

One E27 lamp, up to 20W. An LED GLS in the A60 shape is the sensible choice and diffuses nicely behind the opal glass.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you pair a dimmable lamp with a compatible dimmer. Neither the lamp nor a dimmer comes with the fitting.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

It is rated for moisture, which makes it appropriate for bathrooms, shower rooms and en suites away from direct jets of water.

How do I clean the glass?

Switch off at the wall and let everything cool, then dust with a dry cloth. For steam marks, use a damp cloth and dry the glass fully afterwards.
