Description

The Knightsbridge 10AX 2-way pull cord switch is designed for UK Building Regulations Part M compliance, with a 2m grey cord fitted with a black triangular bangle that contrasts visually against most ceiling colours. The triangular shape differentiates it from emergency assistance pull cords, which use circular bangles, reducing confusion in bathrooms, care facilities and accessible residential installations.

The switch fits ceiling roses in bathrooms, shower rooms, en-suites and accessible WCs where wall-mounted switches cannot meet Part M accessibility requirements. The 2-way switching allows the light circuit to be controlled from both the pull cord and a second switch elsewhere in the room. The white thermoset resin base carries an anti-microbial additive tested to reduce bacterial growth on the switch surface, making it suitable for clinical, care and high-hygiene environments.

The 10AX rating handles resistive loads up to 2,300W and inductive loads (motors, transformers) up to 1,000W on 230V mains. The IP20 rating confirms protection against solid objects larger than 12.5mm, making it suitable for general indoor dry locations but not zones 1 or 2 in bathrooms. The 76mm diameter base mounts to a standard ceiling rose with two wood screws. Knightsbridge backs the switch with a 25-year warranty.

Frequently Asked

What does Part M compliance mean?

Part M of the UK Building Regulations sets accessibility standards for new and refurbished buildings. This pull cord switch meets Part M by using a contrasting triangular bangle on a 2m cord, making it reachable and identifiable by users with limited mobility or visual impairment.

Can this be installed in a bathroom?

Yes, but only outside zones 1 and 2. The IP20 rating confirms it is suitable for general indoor locations but not direct spray zones. In most bathrooms the pull cord is fitted to the ceiling in the centre of the room, well away from the shower or bath enclosure.

What is 2-way switching?

2-way switching allows the same light circuit to be controlled from two different switch positions. In a bathroom this typically means the pull cord and a wall-mounted switch outside the door, so the light can be turned on before entering and off from either location.

What is the anti-microbial additive?

The white thermoset base incorporates an anti-microbial agent tested to reduce bacterial growth on the switch surface. This does not replace cleaning but provides an additional hygiene layer in environments where touch-surface contamination is a concern, such as care homes, clinics and hospitals.
