A pendant light, 37cm wide, in black. At 37cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. A pendant hangs in the sightline rather than at the edge of it, so it is the one light people look at directly. Over a table that puts it at eye level for everyone seated.

A dark finish reads as a shape rather than a surface, so the outline does the work and the detail recedes. Against a pale wall that is graphic; against a dark one the piece almost disappears. Rattan is a climbing palm, steamed and bent rather than cut and joined, which is why the curves are continuous and the whole piece weighs so little. Every length differs slightly in colour, so no two pieces match exactly. The shade is included rather than sold alongside, which is worth checking against anything cheaper. Shade reducer: Yes.

Two shades of the same size can light a room completely differently depending on how open the top and bottom are. A narrow top pushes light down into a pool; a wide one lets it wash the ceiling as well. A fabric shade fades from the inside out rather than the outside in, because the bulb is closer than the window. A lining slows that considerably, which is most of what a lining is for.

Drop height is the decision. Over a dining table the lowest point wants to be roughly 75 to 85cm above the surface — low enough to light it, high enough to see across. Over an island or in a hall it wants to be higher.
